Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

With its clear emphasis on the creative process, the new Second Edition of this innovative text shows future teachers how to tap into their own creativity in order to foster children's creative growth. Grounded in research and theory, coverage supports a constructivist notion of the creative arts and moves students away from prescribed activities and projects in favor of encouraging the creative potential of all children. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover

This text conveys the importance of the process rather than the product of creativity in the arts. It encourages preservice teachers to tap into their own creativity so that they are better equipped to help children find ways to express themselves creatively and therefore develop to their own potential.

Recurring chapter features in this text include encouraging family involvement in the creative arts at home, multicultural art ideas, integrating children’s literature in the arts, developmentally appropriate practice, students with special needs, national standards for the four creative arts, and personal and professional development in the arts.

Key Additions in This Edition:

  • Methods for Integrating the Creative Arts into Content Areas. To answer the question, “How do I include the creative arts within a standards-driven curriculum?” new sections in the creative arts chapters support preservice teachers in addressing all of the national content areas standards (language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies) in ways that are appropriate for young children.
  • Lesson Planning.  The chapters on music, dance and movement, visual arts and theatre (drama) present strategies for developing integrated lesson plans.
  • Assessment Suggestions. Assessment procedures are presented and described to provide concrete ways for children to demonstrate their capabilities authentically.

I found this book to be excellent for the classroom. The author supports teaching art to children by grounding her methods in current learning theories. I have had students tell me that they enjoyed the many stories of real classroom experiences that the author shares throughout the book. It is a good resource and inspiration for those who want to teach art to children.

With so much information in this book, I am already planning to use the examples in my classroom, I like many of the examples that are discussed. The Creative Arts used in a classroom are so interesting and enjoyed by students, giving them the opportunity to express themselves and see the work also displaying, leaving them proud.

It can go on a bit much about touchy-feeling, artsy-fartsy ideas, but when it talks about actual curriculum suggestions and developmental appropriateness, there are some great ideas. I tried some guided imagery with my students and they enjoyed it.

I had to get this book for class. It turns out I continue to use it out of class. It is a great resource for the teacher to add art and creativity in the classroom.

Book was listed as acceptable. I have purchased many books like this but this one was trashed! So marked up I can hardly read it! Terrible!

Required text book for class. This is required for Longwood University's THEA 448 class. The text is very boring indeed.
