This text conveys the importance of the process rather than the product of creativity in the arts. It encourages preservice teachers to tap into their own creativity so that they are better equipped to help children find ways to express themselves creatively and therefore develop to their own potential.
Recurring chapter features in this text include encouraging family involvement in the creative arts at home, multicultural art ideas, integrating children’s literature in the arts, developmentally appropriate practice, students with special needs, national standards for the four creative arts, and personal and professional development in the arts.
Key Additions in This Edition:
- Methods for Integrating the Creative Arts into Content Areas. To answer the question, “How do I include the creative arts within a standards-driven curriculum?” new sections in the creative arts chapters support preservice teachers in addressing all of the national content areas standards (language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies) in ways that are appropriate for young children.
- Lesson Planning. The chapters on music, dance and movement, visual arts and theatre (drama) present strategies for developing integrated lesson plans.
- Assessment Suggestions. Assessment procedures are presented and described to provide concrete ways for children to demonstrate their capabilities authentically.
