I'm a real Ditko fan and have always loved his artwork---It took a while to figure out exactly where the stories from this book came from---Like, it was'nt obvious. Turns out these are repro stories from Ditko's work for the schlock publisher Charlton---the bottom of the barrel in the comic book business. These 1970's stories are all in the "mystery" vein with some recurring characters. The art work is cool, not his absolute best (see his work for Creepy and Eerie for that), but not the worst either ( see his "Blue Beetle for Charlton for that.) One very cool part are several inserts with essays and photos of the hardly ever photographed Ditko--the best of which shows him with his studio partner Eric Stanton the fetish artist, along with some Stanton penciled and Ditko inked artwork--- Ditko's style overwhelms! For big Ditko fans only.

This is a great looking book -- top quality paper stock, sturdy binding, and oversize pages that show off the art work (mostly from the comics themselves) in its best possible light. Unfortunately, 80% of the stories are mediocre, uninspired Charlton potboilers from the 70s, when Ditko was simply grinding it out. The several stories from 1960 and earlier are the only good ones, but they can't make up for the rest of the totally forgettable material. A more appropriate title for this book would be "The Journeyman work of Ditko." If you're looking for a book that truly shows the creativity of Ditko, stick with his work for Marvel. I highly recommend the Amazing Fantasy Omnibus if you can find a copy. And of course his Spider-Man and Dr. Strange stories are in a class by themselves. This volume is for Ditko fanatics only.

Art and edition is incredible. Some of the articles are trying to establish the JD Salinger aspect of Ditko, not accenting his creativity. Odd for me. For that I'd rather read, Strange and Stranger. Otherwise, a must buy.

Steve Ditko, who I believe was the creator of Spider-man,is an enigma and recluse who every artist, of comic books, and comic collectors would love to sit down with and hear his history of working in the industry. To me one of his most lasting and ingenious contributions to comics was the design of the Spider man costume which was a departure from the 'underwear' on the outside of your clothes look of most of the characters.
I,and many others, have always hoped he would come out of his hiding place and write an autobiography or memoir but time passes and I hold little hope of ever seeing that. No matter, I wish him the best and hope he knows his unique style and quirky characters have inspired generations. Some of the best stories he ever illustrated were also written by him.
Anyone unfamiliar with Mr.Ditko should look up his works and then seek out the documentary on him-I saw it on Youtube.

Another beautiful book by Craig Yoe spotlighting the work of Steve Ditko. The art of Ditko is explored through his work itself, a handful of essays by various people, some images scanned from original art and some rare photographs of Mr. Ditko himself. The stories reprinted are mostly short horror stories published originlly by Charlton in years ranging from the 50s through the 70s. My only thought that could improve the book: some text introducing each short story telling us a little more about why each was chosen for placement in this book. Once I began reading THE CREATIVITY OF DITKO it was hard to put it down!
