Product Description

Leon Thomas became a star on the back of his original cut of The Creator Had A Master Plan recorded with Pharaoh Sanders. This success was consolidated with four studio albums and several live sessions recorded for Flying Dutchman. A year as a member of Santana brought him to the attention of an even wider audience. His yodeling style allied with deep blues roots has influenced several generations of jazz singers, most recently the Grammy Award-winning jazz star of 2012, Gregory Porter. Leon Thomas' music mixed spiritualism with African influences and became important to the acid jazz scene, where he was sampled by Galliano, while his records became sought after collector's items. In recent years the soul crowd has pushed up the value of his 45s Love Each Other and Just In Time To See The Sun. The Creator... pieces together the very best tracks from his five years at Flying Dutchman, including his collaborations with the Pharaoh Sanders band on his debut album, The Creator Has A Master Plan and Let The Rain Fall On Me; later more soul-influenced numbers, and the apocalyptic spiritual jazz masterpiece Shape Your Mind To Die. We have also found a previously unreleased full length version of his live favorite Um Um Um.

Review

Superlative anthology of the East St. Louis singer's Flying Dutchman recordings. Leon Thomas might not be as well known as Pharoah Sanders, with whom he worked on The Creator Has A Master Plan, but he was, nevertheless, a ground-breaker, his African-inspired yodeling and spiritual seeking forging new roads ahead for the jazz vocalist. Influenced by Coltrane, Shepp and Kirk and an integral part of The New Thing!, Thomas recorded transcendental jazz with a political and social conscience. This 15 tracker, culled from his four studio and two-and-a-half live albums for producer Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman label, never puts a foot wrong. (5 STARS) --Mojo

I remember owning 'Spirits Known & Unknown' by Leon Thomas. I think it was originally released on Impulse. As a kid, I used to have the basement all to myself after school, on the south side of Chicago. That is, until I would put on Leon Thomas, and my Mom would come pouncing down the stairs, shouting at me to turn that off! lol. (She hated Leon Thomas, and especially, Doug Clark & The Hot Nuts!) Memories...
Seeing this Collection brought back those memories of this gifted, intense and gentle soul. Leon was doing his own thing. Scatting, yodeling, and doing vocalizations I had never heard before! The closest in comparison, at that time, was Tim Buckley's 'Starsailor' (still unavailable on CD!) I hope they got to meet each other. I am sure they did...
Now I am in an Old Folks Home, so have to respect everyone's 'quiet time'. So, I use headphones now. But, oh, how I'd love to crank Leon Thomas up through the Polk Audio's at 3AM here at the Old Folk's Home! Just Once! I mean....cant we all just love one another?

When you first hear "The creator has a master plan, peace and happiness for everyman" followed by fantastic african american scat-yodeling on Pharoah Sanders "Karma" LP featuring Leon Thomas you know you've experienced beautiful music. This CD gathers up the rest of Leon's output in those years and it's better, It's fantastic. "Shape your mind to die," yuppie tool.

I first heard of Leon Thomas a few years ago when the song "The Creator Has a Master Plan" caught my ear on a compiliation album. Great song. But then I read the rave review in Mojo Magazine (see the main Amazon review) earlier this year that announced this compilation of the singer's material on the Flying Dutchman label. Ordered it from Amazon and I'm quite impressed with the variety and quality of the songs on this CD.

A lot is written about the unique "yodeling" style of Leon Thomas, along with a bit of scat singing. One review (reprinted in the booklet that comes with this CD) called him a "one-man music machine." Yeah, he's that talented. But for my tastes, Leon Thomas is more listenable, and effective, when he's not yodeling or doing vocal gymnastics. He has a very warm, smooth, soulful and melodic vocal style and I honestly think the yodeling gimmick distracts from some tunes. Besides his distinctive vocals, Thomas's music exuded a funky jazz style, mixed with some blues vibes and more traditional jazz compositions.

Leon Thomas played with Pharoah Sanders and his band, as well as Archie Shepp, and later toured with Santana as a member of his band in 1973. The man has paid his musical dues and played with legends. But this compilation shows that he was quite capable of producing some truly excellent music on his own too, although he's helped by a talented supporting cast, including names such as Lonnie Liston Smith (whose style is slightly similar to that of Leon Thomas), Billy Cobham, Randy Brecker, Cornell Dupree, Oliver Nelson, and others.

Over 75 minutes of music on this CD, plus you get a 16-page booklet with reproductions of the original album covers (great artwork!) and an informative essay by Dean Rudland. Great package and very memorable music. You can't go wrong with this CD. I'm very happy to have discovered this guy's music. Leon Thomas deserves much more recognition and more listeners.
