From the Author

I discuss cruising myths near the beginning of The Cruise Traveler's Handbook. These are the objections and beliefs that I used to have about cruising before experiencing my first one in 2004, and they are the same ones that I still hear from people that have not yet been on a cruise.  By addressing them head-on I hope that I open everyone's mind to cruising. Something I wish someone had done for me earlier.

Cruising as a vacation choice is now my preferred way of exploring the world. It has taken me to places I would never have gone to otherwise, and revealed experiences and sights I would have missed if I had stuck to doing land based vacations only.

I believe that the way that cruising is growing and developing there is now a way of cruising and a cruise option for everyone. No matter on a traveler's interests and passions there is an unforgettable cruise on some ocean, river or canal for them. That is why in The Cruise Traveler's Handbook I wanted to look at and explore a wide range of cruising options available and how to decide which will be best suited to different types of travelers. It is designed to help first time cruisers make the leap and open existing cruisers minds to new and different cruising options too.

I generally review entertainment items here on Amazon but, since I do take a cruise or two each year, I wanted to share my thoughts on this book.

I first discovered travel writer Gary Bembridge when I was searching the internet for podcasts for a cruise I was taking to Northern Europe and the fjords. I discovered his 100+ “Tips for Travellers” (as Bembridge always says : “Travellers with two “L”s – the British way”) podcasts on iTunes and the one on the fjords of Geiranger Norway offered enough suggestions that it made out trip special.

Though he has been writing a blog and recording the (free) podcasts on cruising to worldwide destinations for over a decade (and I do recommend that you search for these) , this is his first printed book venture. Reading through the 130-page softbound volume, Bembridge’s enthusiasm and “wanting to help” shines through, just as in those podcasts.

The title might be a bit misleading so I’ll try to clarify the purpose of the book here. It is really aimed at person who have never taken a cruise before and are deciding whether “cruising” is for them. As someone who has been taking cruises for about 10 years (beginning with an Alaska cruise – the one I recommend that first-time cruisers should start with), I already knew most of the info contained here. What Bembridge explains – and very well too – is that “cruising” can be different things for different people. It can range from seven nights on a 6,000 passenger mega-ship that only travels to large ports (usually the same ones) and include lots of on-board activities, to the smaller (and obviously more expensive) ships that are all-inclusive (port tours and wine are included in the price) to river cruises and even freighters – for the no-frills experience.

Gary does a good job informing us of all the current cruise lines and their target market/niches. He lets us know cabin types and how upgrades work and how to position yourself to be more likely to get one.

He urges cruisers to watch their budget while on-board, cautioning us on using our ship 'credit' cards, on-board shopping, when the sales will be as well as shopping on the islands.

I think many cruisers will like his tips on excursions - use local and support the local economy. We have done this and have been very happy. He gives resources for finding the excursions, which is great.

He touches on more than just traditional cruising, letting us know about adventure and themed cruises and how to find out about them.

If you've never cruised, he dispels common cruising myths and recommends trying out a short cruise before a longer one. I believe there is something for everyone on a cruise.

His love and passion for cruising really comes out in his writing as he talks about the adventure, the endless sea and meeting great people. Only he says it a lot better.

If you are going on a cruise this book is a must.

Book is engaging and fun to read. I have been on 21 cruises and thought I knew much all the tricks and tips. I didn't. I learned many new tricks and tips from this book. Absolutely worth the cost.

I have purchased other books about cruising but this one is by far the best. The book is a great resource for planning your cruise vacation, getting the best deals and maximizing your trip.

Cruising myths are covered....the myths vs. reality. Different ships for different trips.

All in all an outstanding book.

Signed,
Erica Phillipson

I had a chance to read this book on a flight last month and I wound up reading the whole book in one sitting. Great cruise tips and break downs of the different types of cruise vacations.
