Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Favre (Don't Bet Against Me), an NFL wife and cancer survivor, and hemophiliac pastor Stanford (A Positive Life) share their experiences addressing "chronic" conditions, both physical and emotional, that impede faithful living. Asserting that "God wants us to run, not limp, to jump, not hobble into His grace," the authors invite readers to believe that inhibited lives may be transformed through committed spiritual practice, such as their treatment plan for healing. Intending the book to be read over a 40-day period, the authors offer guidance, Bible study, and encouragement. Four 10-day sections, based on the principles of Compassion, Understanding, Response, and Encouragement (CURE), each divide into four subsections: Discover, in which the authors take turns providing personal illustrations; Deepen, which invites reflection on a wide range of scriptural texts; Deploy, which offers suggestions for journaling or other concrete actions; and Discern, which provides a closing prayer. Both authors relate their personal struggles with health, marital fidelity, and vocation in a sensitive, respectful manner that invites similarly honest reflection. Readers seeking guided spiritual direction may find this personable book a welcome resource.

From Booklist

There’s one important message here: emotional pain and suffering can be greatly reduced by forgetting oneself and showing compassion toward others. After receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer, Favre, wife of NFL star quarterback Brett Favre, established a foundation to help women fight the disease and wrote Don’t Bet Against Me! (2008), a hopeful book for breast cancer survivors. Stanford is an HIV-positive Methodist minister and author of When God Disappears (2008). In this title, their combined stories about themselves, their families, and people they’ve encountered provide inspiration for opting to live according to Christ’s example instead of living in crisis. Beyond listing common mistakes that lead to crisis living and chronic unhappiness, the book serves as a 40-day, Bible-study guide and encourages discernment and application of God-centered truths for facing daily challenges. Full of helpful advice, but loaded with Biblespeak, so keep the King James handy. --Susan DeGrane

You're diseased, I'm afraid. Not sure what can heal it either. It's life. And it's chronic. You ever feel hopeless? Like you're just living live without rhyme or reason, purpose or plan? Deanna Favre and Shane Stanford have a solution. In The Cure of the Chronic Life, they take the reader on a 40 day journey towards hope.

Beginning with seven worries and ending in seven wonders, the reader is walked through the CURE. Compassion teaches us to go beyond our own struggles to see the struggles of others. Understanding involves see our life as God sees our life. Response is about loving others just as God loved us. And Encouragement means becoming the blessing we have received in Christ.

The meat of the book is spent in devotionals that practically show the power of CURE. Forty days of devotionals mean ten each are spent discussing or portraying the concepts within CURE. Broken down into a Scripture reading, devotional (Discover), reflective questions (Deepen), practical suggestions (Deploy), and a final prayer (Discern), this book is just what the doctor ordered to cure the chronic life!

The devotions themselves are powerful stories that come from either Deanna or Shane's lives. Deanna Favre is a breast-cancer survivor, the President/CEO of Favre 4 Hope Foundation, and wife of legendary NFL quarterback Brett Favre. Shane is a pastor who is HIV-positive due to a tainted blood transfusion. Both have been through the valley of the chronic life, but through the life-changing power of Christ, have overcome their hopelessness and now share that experience with you.

In the midst of hopelessness we are pointed toward Grace. And thus we come victorious. This is a great daily devotional that could also serve well as a Sunday School or small group discussion. Favre and Stanford remind us that whatever the problem, whatever the struggle, whatever the question, whatever the crisis - the answer lies in our relationship with God.

Saw this book reviewed on GMA, and still wasn't sure about it. Looked through it at the bookstore and bought it. And have not put it down since. Both Favre and Stanford hit on key points, such as how we can unknowingly get in our own way, and that Christ wants better for us. Then the book provides relevant examples along with Scripture for us to read and study so that we can understand God's word and work to overcome the challenges we face. I am truly enjoying this book and am referring it to friends.

I work at the church where Shane Stanford serves. He is a great guy and his books are always very uplifting and thought-provoking. This current book is a great focus on getting unstuck, as Max Lucado says in the foreword. I really think God is using this book to speak direction to many people. It has insight and personal stories from Deanna Favre, who is also a super person who cares about the reader. Together, they've knitted a plan to jumpstart a person seeking recovery from the pit. I highly recommend it.

"Cure" is another terrific addition to Shane Stanford's ever-expanding collection of inspirational literature. The pairing of Shane with Deanna provides an extra dimension of experience in conquering the "chronic" patterns of life into which we so easily fall. I also highly recommend "A Positive Life" which is an auto-biography of Shane's life as a hemophiliac and HIV survivor. As a hemophiliac, myself, who lost two brothers to AIDS/hepatitis, I could relate all too well to his compelling story. I have had the privelege of meeting Shane and his delightful family in person and my life has been profoundly changed by this remarkable man.
