Editorial Reviews

"It entertains as it describes ... Sherman's adventures as he journeyed into faith." -- Youth Worker Journal, March/April 2006

From the Publisher

Ages 9 to 13 will enjoy reading this story. Parents and teachers (in Christian schools and Sunday schools) of this age group will find that "The Dangerous Journey of Sherman the Sheep" is perfect for reading aloud to their family or classroom. One teacher who used this book, said it was "a comfortable way to open up dialog about some hard issues."

More About the Author

Dean Davis (1947- ) was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1969, he graduated from U.C. Santa Cruz with a degree in Philosophy. A true child of the 60's, he plunged headlong into the counterculture, practicing a wide variety of Eastern religions, especially Zen Buddhism. Then, in 1974, in the midst of a deep personal crisis, the God of the Bible graciously stepped in, turning a seeker into a finder, and an orphan into a beloved son, all through a life-changing revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ. Since then, Dean has followed the Lord down many roads, serving as a pastor, teaching elder, Sunday School director (with his wife, Linda), Christian bookstore manager, pro-life leader, and substitute school teacher. In recent years, he has greatly enjoyed working as the Director of Come Let Us Reason, a Bible teaching ministry specializing in Worlvdiew Studies and Apologetics. He and Linda currently reside in Santa Rosa, California. Believing with Luther Burbank that it is indeed "the chosen spot of the earth as far as nature is concerned," they hope to grow old there together, even as they keep careful tabs on their five far-flung kids: Mark, Beth, Jonathan, Rebekah, and Sara.

Format: Audible Audio Edition
I enjoy having audio versions of books for my children and I to listen to while driving or doing chores around the house, or even just to listen to in lieu of watching television and I have to say that The Dangerous Journey of Sherman The Sheep fits the bill for all of the above. Written by Dean Davis and read by Katie Leigh you and your children will be swept up in the telling of the tale of Sherman who must learn the hard way what the Shepherd wants for him and his life. That's usually the way of things though - that sometimes we just don't listen and make life harder on ourselves and even those around us. Children will be able to relate to Sherman, a young sheep, who doesn't want to listen to dad and who wants to have lots of friends even if they are the wrong friends, because he's young and wants to have fun.

Katie Leigh's voice sort of lulls one into a quite repose as they listen to her reading the story, and it works to calm the nerves of children who may otherwise be running wild around the house. I found my children got pulled into the story and really enjoyed listening to it, even though there aren't any sound effects or even many voice changes like they are used to in some audio dramas/books. It runs 2 hours and 48 minutes but you don't have to listen all at once because you can add bookmarks to where you leave off so you can pick up where you left off - making it great if you have to attend to something and need to stop listening. Younger children may not quite grasp the allegorical aspect of the story, but it's never to early to start talking to them about God's Ways and following Him and this is great way to start doing that in a way that everyone relates to - story telling.

** I was given an audio copy of this from Cladach Publishing in exchange for posting my own opinion, no other compensation was given.
