Paperbacks, Comic Books and D&D is the motivation behind Craig Halloran's childhood dream to write epic fantasy. Inspired by the likes of Robert E. Howard and R.A. Salvatore his stories are fast-paced, action-packed and easy to follow. Also, as time between fantasy books permits, he enjoys writing supernatural, paranormal and apocalyptic fiction.

A veteran and family man (children, dogs, and cats), he still finds time to enjoy sports (mostly football), working out, fishing, and watching TV. For more news and anecdotes you can follow him at:

In a word, fun!

In three words: FUN FUN FUN!

Seriously this is a great action fantasy. I love the way Halloran keeps the action moving forward. Evil needs to have its face smashed and the Darkslayer is the hero to do it. Alternatively, Evil might require a dirk slid betwixt its ribs and Melegal (my fave character) will be happy to oblige.

This is not Tolkien. Noone will break into a 5-page song about the coming of spring (not that there's anything wrong with that!) but that's probably not what you're looking for reading the DarkSLAYER, is it? Look at that cover-- that's what I'm talking about! That reminds me--Ernie Chan (arguably the best of Marvel's illustrators for the Conan the Barbarian and SSOC series among others) produced some spectacular artwork to highlight scenes throughout the book.

Buy it! Read it! But strap on a helmet first. Maybe wear a cup.

I got this book because I've always been surrounded by D&D from my brothers and husband and from the other reviews it seems like I would like it. I'm also a big fantasy fan in general. I wasn't let down at all by this book. It had exactly the elements I was looking for in a fantasy book. The characters were dynamic, likable and even amusing at times, especially Melegal.

The plot was exciting and sucked me into reading it right away which was great. So many times I get bored in a book within the first few pages, but not with this one. This story is solid and action packed. There is never a dull moment in Darkslayer! After I finished reading it, I quickly bought book 2 because I wanted to read more about the adventures and characters. I have questions that needed to be answered and I look forward to continuing the saga.

Published in 2010, The Darkslayer is a standard Dungeons & Dragons style fantasy adventure written by Craig Halloran. The story takes place on the harsh world of Bish where a warrior named Venir (The Darkslayer) and his slim thieving companion Melegal live in the City of Bone where they make a living skimming and conning royalty out of their money. When Venir and Melegal finally make the mistake of crossing the wrong family of "Royals" they end up fleeing the City of Bone to avoid retribution. Here are my thoughts on The Darkslayer;

Pros

+ Quick, easy and entertaining read.

+ Some rather humorous dialogue.

+ Excellent hand drawn illustrations by Ernie Chan to accompany the story. If you enjoy the illustrations there are more available online if you search the author or artist's names. I found illustrations of Jarla the Brigand Queen, Farc the Ogre, Melegal and Eep the Imp. All very well done and should have been included in the original book.

+ Draws heavily on a Dungeons & Dragons background so if you're fan the story is more easily followed. In addition to all of the standard humanoid and demi-human races included you'll find spell casters using Web, Chain Lightning and other familiar spells as well magical Helms of Infravision/Regeneration, Hat of Hypnotism, Bags of Holding etc.

+ The Underlings were an interesting and exceptionally cruel race.

Cons <Contains SPOILERS>

- Amateurish Writing. I constantly found myself rewriting sentences in my head as I was reading so they sounded more coherent.

- Some poor and often laughable dialogue that would fit a modern day professional wrestling event but not a traditional fantasy setting. Examples include; "You're goin' down! Bring it! Shut it!

A bloody romp of an adventure focusing on the Venir (the Darkslayer), the mysterious armor and weapons that he controls or that control him, and his friends as they take on evil in a variety of forms from hunter/warriors to sorcerers to even god-like enemies.

I found this on my Sony e-reader, and I'm so glad I gave it a chance. I was hooked on the series! The characters are so interesting and the plot is addictive. I found I was wondering what happens next, and would read at night until I fell asleep with my e reader still in my hands.

Brilliant characters, great plot. Totally hooked after the first few pages. Went straight on to buy the next few books in the Darkslayer series. Fantastic author, really captures your interest. Quite liked the way the epilogue was done, the background to the story managed to make me like the characters even more! Really looking forward to continuing on to the Darkslayer's next adventure!

Being a former D&D nerd, and Fantasy Novel fan I am always looking for something new. You know you are reading a great story when you become attached to it's characters. This novel did that to me. The world of Bish is an amazing setting for the story of the Darkslayer. I have almost finished the second novel in this series, and they just keep getting better! Read it, you won't be disappointed!

This is a very enjoyable book. I actually read all four in a few weeks. The writing is somewhat stilted in this first one. It reminded me of when I was a kid, trying to write a Robert E. Howard type of story. However, both the writing and character development vastly improves over the course of the four books! I recommend it and can't wait for book five.
