Editorial Reviews

You wouldn't think the guy responsible for the ultimate bump-and-grind anthem "The Stripper" would also have arranged one of the all-time favorite Christmas albums of all time, but that just goes to show just how versatile a musician David Rose was. Produced by David Axelrod, this 1968 release has been a fixture atop holiday music fan's wish lists in fact, this album was so popular that Capitol reissued it under the title Little Drummer Boy: Christmas Favorites Conducted by David Rose, and music from this album has long been prominently featured inside Disney theme parks at the Main Street U.S.A. Christmas Area. This Real Gone reissue comes to you with the original artwork from the original release, with sparkling remastering and liner notes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Album November 25, 2011
By Mike D.
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Glad to see this reissued. It skipped my notice in the 1960's. The orchestrations are lovely, as one would expect from David Rose, but not fully realized. 5 of the 11 tracks clock in at under 2 minutes. The entire album is only 23 minutes long.

3.0 out of 5 stars 23.6 Minutes Of Christmas Music From 1967 December 14, 2011
By oxxo
Format:Audio CD
OK, so I'm typically a supporter of any reissue company digging into the vaults of yesteryear (especially at Capitol) and bringing lost titles to CD, but I gotta say this one is kind of a rip-off. The music is great, and exactly what you'd expect from easy listening Christmas music from Capitol circa 1967, but Real Gone Music should've coupled this with another release for at least a two-fer (if not a three-fer) to justify the price. In these days of waning CD sales, I'd expect the reissue labels to follow UK Ace/Kent's policy of cramming as much material as possible into a CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally Reissued on CD! March 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
David Rose's Christmas recordings may be considered some of the finest and most beautiful recordings to grace a music collection. Long ago, my father had this LP and to see it released and be able to listen to it in living stereo, without the hisses, pops and clicks is nothing short of miraculous. I would highly recommend newly released CD to anyone with an interest in beautiful Christmas music. In my opinion, it is no less of a classic to the season than Bing Crosby, Perry Como, or Bert Kaempfert. Bravo Real Gone Music! The remastering job on this album is excellent. Looking forward to next season's Christmas reissues!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! December 23, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
For years I had been looking for more David Rose on CD. This year I found his Christmas album and it was all I expected and more. The arrangements fit his style while remaining true to tradition. The album is short (30 minutes) but that was the norm for albums at that time; also, Christmas songs tend to be shorter. This is a great addition to your holiday playlist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Huge Five Stars For This Classic Christmas Album August 22, 2012
By rodney
Format:Audio CD
This late 1960's christmas album by DAVID ROSE is one that if you like the orchestra instrumental christmas albums from the 1950's and 1960's, then this should be completely for you. It certainly is for me.

Throughout this amazing album, you get songs done in a similar fashion as to Andre Kostelanetz and Percy Faith. If you like those two orchestra leaders, then songs like THE CHRISTMAS WALTZ and CAROL OF THE BELLS will remind you of those other two great baton masters. As will every other song on this fabulous cd. In fact, THE CHRISTMAS WALTZ is a contender for the best version of the song out there as is....

....TOYLAND which is just soothing in a very deep and emotional version unlike any version of the song I have ever heard. Very similar to the style of JACKIE GLEASON on his 1956 christmas album, MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Another song to highlight is THE CHRISTMAS TREE which was a new song for me but let me tell you, I'm usually not a fan of new christmas songs on instrumental albums as it's often hard to get a christmas atmosphere out of it sinc eit's just unfamiliar, however, this is an exception as the mood is most definitely christmas and the often heard bells really help create the holiday mood.

Really, I could highlight all the songs on this cd as they are just so awesome and this includes all the medleys which are in the religious nature. DAVID ROSE really knew how to capture the mood of the song, whether it be secular or religious, and I have to give this my 100% full recommendation despite it being under a half hour. Just listen to it for enjoyment and I'm sure you will do just that, enjoy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Good January 2, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I kind of regret buying this CD because It's so short, I think only around 23 minutes. The music is good, but the price should be $5 or less because it's really only half a CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Nostalgic Christmas Album! July 8, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It's great to hear these classic Christmas songs played by an all-time music maker. Some of the selections can be heard each year on the traditional Christmas Day "Yule Log" .
