Book Description

The Day I Met Dr. Seuss tells the funny rhyming story of Annie G. Magee, a young girl who wants to meet Dr. Seuss and find out what makes him so unique. Not content to simply write to Dr. Seuss, Annie travels to his house, summons her courage and knocks upon the door. Dr. Seuss is not at home, but Annie isn’t ready to give up quite yet.

If you’ve ever read a Dr. Seuss book and thought, “I wonder where he got his ideas from?” or ever wished you could have met Dr. Seuss, then I hope you enjoy Annie’s adventure.

While the events in the story never occurred, the facts about Theodor Seuss Geisel are historically accurate and outlined in the book’s postscript.

This story was one of the first Anne Emerick ever wrote and in 1990 she sent a copy to Theodor Geisel (Dr. Suess) to be sure the story would not offend him in any way. He replied that it did not.

The Day I Met Dr. Seuss includes an author’s note with the story behind the book’s publication, a tale that should encourage any unpublished author with a string of rejection letters.

Thanks to the following people for their contributions to the story,
Nikolai Popov, who created the cover illustration
ASourceOfJoy Graphic Design, http://graphics.asourceofjoy.org who created the cover design.
Finally, Dionne Obeso (DionneObeso.com), whose editing provided the finishing touches on this story.

The story opens with the following passage:

For years I had read of the Cat in the Hat
And Horton the Elephant, who faithfully sat.
Then one day reading Seuss just wasn’t enough,
I wanted to know how Seuss thought up this stuff.
I wanted to know what went on in his head.
So I wrote him a letter. Here's what it said:

"Dear Dr. Seuss,

What makes you, you?
What makes you think the thoughts that you do?
Is there a secret that helps you to see
An elephant sitting alone in a tree?
It might be a secret you don't want to be found,
And so when reporters come sneaking around,
You hide your great Seussian secret away.
You greet them politely and always you say,
"I'm really quite normal, quite normal, you see.
Yes I am Dr. Seuss and who might you be?"
The claim that you're normal. Come on now, let's face it.
You haven't a fact upon which to base it.
You constantly rhyme. Is your flair for phonetic
Something acquired? Or is it genetic?
You say that you're normal, but I disagree.
Please tell me your secret. It'll be safe with me.

And I signed it,

"Sincerely,
Annie G. Magee"

"This ebook is a fun, quick read, that captures the rhyming cadences of Dr. Seuss. It would make a great read-aloud for any age or grade level"

"Emerick also includes a great deal of factual information about Dr. Seuss at the end of the story. This is a valuable addition to the book, and will be very useful for teachers and parents who want to use this story to introduce one of our great writers to their children."

5.0 out of 5 stars It rhymed! It did! Five stars is my bid! December 3, 2012

I wasn't sure what I would think about this book at first. In some ways my inner child was screaming "you can't make a book about Dr.Seuss and make it rhyme like a Dr.Seuss book and then make it your own. Hate admitting when I'm wrong but this time I was. This book is well written and entertaining and fun to read. Much like the featured author in this book, the story has a plot and although it rhymes from beginning to end, it never gets boring. I loved the forward the author put in this book as it was humble and honest and gave you a real sense of how much she cared about this work. Everyone in Whoville should be proud of this work that honors this fine creator of fiction. Loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars My child within is clapping November 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
What a delightful read - and I'm a granny, reading it to myself. My grand-daughter has that joy ahead of her.
I believe Dr. Seuss would feel proud and grateful for this worthy tribute to him and his unique style. I doubt anyone could capture his original brand of humour, but Anne has mimicked his style admirably, whilst offering a fascinating storyline for the reader to follow.
I love her postscript about those 'who work hard at what they do best . . . just everyday people who accomplished some feat'. Anne certainly has worked hard - and accomplished an entertaining and creative children's storybook.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new Seuss book...finally... September 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Surely we lost a lot with the passing of Dr. Seuss...now, in this endearing new work, Seuss returns through the eyes of author Anne Emerick and "Annie G. Magee." Emerick gives voice to the childhood need in all of us to talk to our idols and heroes and, more notably, lets that hero talk back to remind us that heroes are really just like us- with an extra dose of effort. Now, in addition to teaching millions of children to read, Seuss--with some significant help from Anne Emerick--is a vehicle for encouraging young writers...and the pair even send readers/writers out of the book with a new topic for a story of their own.

More About the Author

First, I am going to write this "author biography" in the first person, because I (Anne Emerick) am, after all, writing it.

So who am I? Someone who has always loved books. I love the connections that books make, whether it is reading them aloud with family or silently reading words that I could never say, but now know someone else feels too. The pictures I've posted include evidence of my life-long love affair with books.

Other facts you may observe looking at my pictures:
- I've never been a snappy dresser.
- I should probably consider hiring an interior decorator.
- I always want to make other people laugh and myself smile.

Do you see my bad hair day photo? I had just been battling with our lawn mower which refused to start. I came inside, hot, sweaty and aggravated. John had just opened a new Polaroid-style camera. "Smile," he said. I complied, but thought, "Oh this is going to be a great photo." I actually ended up loving the photo because I think it proves that a good smile trumps a bad hair day (and a lot else).

Facts you can't tell from my pictures (in no particular order):
- I'm a messy person, very organizationally challenged. Living with me a neat freak would.... well, freak!
- I love dogs. We have three - two Labrador Retrievers and one Cocker Spaniel.
- I have mostly earned my living as a computer programmer, a field known for being filled with wild, life-of-the-party personalities.
- I have run a 5K in under 20 minutes, but it was a very long time ago.
- I am happily married with two kids. Oh, wait, can I count my daughter-in-law? Then we're at three.

Okay, enough about me. If you like my books enough that you want to tell me about it, you can email me at Anne at AboonBooks dot com. I hope to hear from you. If I'm slow to respond, just remember 'organizationally challenged.'
