It could do with a bit more editing and spell checking but all in all it's a pretty good story. I would like to see more in this series in the future. The spelling mistakes are minor and not all that distracting. Having someone else read it first and point them out can easily prevent it in future editions.

Set in the future, the main story is about a scout who has to deliver a message to another military camp and has to make his way across a zombie infested city to do it. He not only meets up with the undead cannibals but the living type as well. I don't want to give too much away as the story is fairly short.

Even an old hillbilly like me enjoys a good zombie story when it's done well and this author did a pretty good job of it. I've already bookmarked his main page so I can keep track of more additions to this story.

First off, while it's still fresh in my mind, I'd like to say that the second story, "Zombie Killer?" Was hysterical. The picture of Rick was so clear and perfect! I can't wait to read more of Richard's and Jackson's story. I did not want to like this series. The last thing I need is another zombie series to keep track of. Well Mr. Cook, you caught me. Hook, line and sinker! I'll be reading every story I can find and I don't mind saying that I'm actually looking forward to enjoying them all. Yep, I would recommend these stories and author.

Great zombie story!! This novel is very realistic and helps you to see the possibilities of how life could be after the Dead return to life. Military training alone isn't enough and politicians are not to be trusted. The people need all the help they can get to survive! Can't wait to read more from this wonderful author!!

If you want zombie action this has it. It also has some very glaring mistakes in mostly grammar and editing. "Sergeant is you saying we can take The Rock back?" I hate this kind of grammar, realizing it is how some people speak. Fine, just can we have consistency in the language of the character? No sign that this Holloway cannot speak proper English until now.

Also there is a paragraph of space between each round of dialogue. So the story is really much shorter than it even sounds to begin with. There are many sentences that run on without a comma or period to separate two sentences. I am not a grammar freak particularly but I do like to have an edited story before it gets to me the reader. I can take some errors if the story is good. This story is good but not that good.

Overall I enjoy this story and plan to read further adventures in the Dead War Series. But 5-stars is a bit much. 3 stars sounds about right for this first effort. The writing was a little awkward and a good editor would help for sure. I glossed over several spelling errors and wrong word usage in spots. But the Dead War Series is right up my alley in terms of a military/zombie thrillers, like Tooth And Nail and The Gathering Dead (A Zombie Apocalypse Novel). I now plan to zip thru the ultra short story The Dead War Series: Safe Zone a Dead War Short Story next.

Disclaimer: I got this book free in exchange for doing a review.

I liked this book, although I wish it had been longer. It had an interesting premise--set in the future, the war against the zombies has been going on for a few years. Mankind has learned a lot about organizing and fighting back but by now, they are badly outnumbered.

Long distance communication (and we're grading on a curve for what counts as long distance in comparison to today) has pretty much fallen by the wayside. When an important message needs to be passed on, it is given to a Scout to deliver.

Scouts are a special division of the army. They travel alone and on foot through the zombie-infested city to deliver the message. In this book, the distance was about 5 miles.

As I understand it, each chapter will be about a different Scout trying to complete his mission to deliver the assigned communication. This chapter was interesting with good characterization and lots of zombie action.

The main drawback I had with it is that it's just too short. This is a personal thing on my part but I don't generally care for reading a story in short bursts like this. I think the set up of each chapter featuring a different Scout on a mission would be less annoying that a more continuous serial that focuses on one character or group of characters but I still much prefer to read these things all together as one book.

I saw that he does have the first three chapters collected together in one book, although it's still fairly short. I believe it's just over 200 pages. I liked this story and the world he's created. I'd be interested in reading more but the length is pretty short still, especially when you consider I've already read 70-some pages of it.
