Editorial Reviews

Greeley Estates take their road-testing sound to new heights, mixing equal parts talent, drive and musical sincerity to craft their strongest record to date. On The Death of Greeley Estates's 15 tracks (an uncommon amount of music by today's standards), Greeley Estates pull themselves back to their roots and truly give their fans what they have been waiting for.

My God! Where do I even begin to surmise this album. I am afraid you all may have to bear with me as I attempt to review this album. However, this review will be the most indepth one since my Bleeding Through critiques. I was on vacation when this album was released and searched for an area with wifi to buy it. Now, let us begin...

Greeley Estates have returned, and are out for blood. "The Death of the Greeley Estates" bulsters 15 ambiant, blood churning tracks that dwarf your expectations, myself included. Finding the most appropriate words to describe their work is a feat. Instead of comparing their discography, I will start where most have attributed the style of this album to; "Go West Young Man...Let the Evil Go East," and "No Rain No Rainbow." As a fan first, above all things, my reviews are my own opinions that I hope to have one person go "ok, he's right." Both GE's previous albums were terrific candidates as the "most listened to band in my ipod." "Go West..." had the energy catchy vocals that, to this day I still recite in my head. Songs such as "Blue Morning, Go West, Let the Evil Go East, Mother Nature is a terrorist, and Desperate Times" were some of my personal favorites that were/are fresh in my memory. When I heard they were producing another album for a 2010 release, I was overjoyed. After two years, Greeley was coming back, and with a vengeance. "NRNR" was gosh darn heavy. Some people either loved it, or hated it. Claiming it to be repetitious, similar, a blur of sounds, and too heavy. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed its ferocious roster of songs. "Seven Hours, Loyal.com, Jealousy Breeds Killing Sprees, Lying Through Your Teeth..., You'll Never Leave Vegas Alive" were just perfect. Ryan's vocals were just phenomenal.

Let me start by saying that this album is great. Greeley Estates performs very well, the music has developed in great ways the sets it apart from the previous work. Unfortunately, the mastering and mixing of this album ruins the entire experience. Ryan Zimmerman sounds like he's in an extremely large, echoey room and falls almost in the background in relevance to the other instruments. The bass and guitar work comes out fairly well, with that same strange unprofessional sounding mixing and mastering. Almost, at times, the music is a garbled mess, with everything almost blending together, and making it unable to tell them apart. The drums actually came out pretty good, the kick and toms being pretty distinguish, the snare at times not so much. Some extra work and time into evening out the levels and perhaps reviewing the recording process altogether would have practically immortalized this album for me. But, because sometimes it's simply not enjoyable to listen to and see past these flaws, it limits my ability to appreciate the musicianship. It's strange, because Go West and No Rain No Rainbow were both masterfully done, musically as well as the work done to master, and this just feels much more immature, or perhaps underdeveloped in comparison. Otherwise, FIVE STARS to the band and how incredible this album is, THREE STARS to whomever thought this was a good job for mixing and mastering. Honestly, it's borderline unacceptable this band let this go. They have way too much potential.
