Book Description

After a year of preparation, eighteen year old Raven Smith has researched and planned out every detail of her summer vacation in Europe; those plans DO NOT include boys, romance, or falling in love (definitely not the last one). But, even before the plane touches-down her well-laid plans go dreadfully off-course.

While still airborne, Raven finds a letter in her carry-on suitcase that her senile neighbor broke into her house to stash in her bag; the letter tells Raven to turn back, not to go to Europe, that an “evil agent of Hell” is looking for her and he will find her if she disregards the letter’s message.

But Raven does disregard the letter…

Almost as soon as Raven steps foot onto Rome’s streets, dark, seductive Andras starts showing up at nearly every site Raven visits; Raven finds herself drawn to Andras in a way she’s never been drawn to anyone, while at the same time… he terrifies her.

Then in comes Nicholas, an impossible-not-to-like Swedish guy, who is determined to keep Raven away from Andras...

The two guys share a dark secret. Both are determined that Raven never learns the truth. She doesn’t know who to trust, or if she should trust anyone.

If Raven frees herself from the deception twined around her… the most horrifying secret she could uncover, might be her own… her past… who she really is…and how the forces of Hell plan to use her to destroy the future…

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic new series!! October 31, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The Deception Dance is action packed from the beginning. It starts out when Raven and her sister, Linnie, go on a trip to Europe. Linnie's roommate, Chauncey, invites herself along and changes all their plans. Instead of staying in hostels, they're staying in extravagant hotels, and Raven is exploring on her own while Linnie and Chauncey party. While in Rome, Raven meets both Nicholas and Andras. Nicholas is a young man that seems very high class. He's always dressed in suits. Andras is mysterious. Raven feels an instant connection to Andras that scares her. After a bad incident at a nightclub, Raven, Linnie, and Chauncey decide to travel to Sweden to visit Nicholas's home. Nicholas's family seems divided on whether they want Raven there. Some members are nice and accept her, others turn their noses up at her. Once again while exploring, Raven runs into Andras and they start a secret romance. But Nicholas has also developed feelings for Raven. Why does Nicholas want to keep Raven away from Andras? What secrets are being kept? Who will Raven choose to be with? And will the truth ever be told?

I loved this book. It was action packed from the beginning until the end. I was disgusted with Chauncey and the way she always had to have her way, and Linnie went along with Chauncey practically ignoring Raven. I also loved the love triangle. Throughout the whole book I wasn't sure who I wanted Raven to be with. Should she be with the safe dependable Nicholas or the intriguingly rugged Andras? I'm still not sure. There were several times I wanted to smack Linnie and Nicholas. I hated the way everyone made decisions for Raven and pressured her into doing what they wanted. I wish Raven would have spoken up for herself more. This book kept my attention throughout with all its twists and turns. While the ending wasn't a cliffhanger, I definitely want to read more.

3.0 out of 5 stars It was okay March 24, 2014
By A
Format:Kindle Edition
It started out so slow with the main character doing little else besides disliking her sister's friend and comparing herself to her sister's friend. The way it started in the very beginning was good with the dream and then the letter, but then it just kind of fell flat for a long time. Even her meeting the two guys didn't really spark anything in the book and I really struggled to keep reading.

Then after just about halfway through things picked and started to get interesting. I still never really felt anything for any of the characters, possibly because of the extremely slow start. I never felt afraid for the characters even when they were surrounded by danger. Also the ending showdown left me completely confused as to what happened. I had hoped the main character might fill that in before the end of the book, but the character seemed as confused as I was. I did like the internal thoughts of the main character, they were probably the best part of the book.

All in all it was an okay read, one that many will likely enjoy. If you pick it up to read, the second half of the book makes up for the slow start.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Deception Dance November 19, 2013
By Melinda
Format:Kindle Edition
The Deception Dance is a jammed packed paranormal thriller capturing the readers attention from the beginning to the very end.

Stradling pens a novel with more than paranormal thriller elements, The Deception Dance contains aspects of romance, supernatural, and magic while the main protagonist Raven Smith battles the force of good vs. evil while vacationing in Europe - fast paced and far from boring.

The quasi love triangle between Raven, Andras and Nicholas will surely appeal to the reader. Enough drama and tension enhancing the romance angle of the narrative. Raven is drawn to one man for his striking good looks and mutual sexual attraction. Drawn to the other man for his handsome angelic face and sweet disposition. Poor Raven, so many gorgeous men so little time. She is never short of male attention albeit desirable or undesirable, once again adding to the storyline.

“It’s almost as if all the sleazy men in this country attended the same seminar, where they learned that all American women go to Italy to sleep with them. The teacher at the seminar told them, “You don’t need to learn English to seduce an American woman, you only need to learn one word: ‘bella.’ If you say it, their belts will snap and pants fall from their hips. If I ever find that seminar teacher, I’m going to kick him in the shin.”

The narrative takes off from the onset, cools in the middle but really hits its apex when the action kicks in full throttle three quarters toward the end. Stradling is detailed in all areas which adds to the excitement and absorbing storyline as a whole but - editing and shortening the narrative would have made The Deception Dance better, in my opinion. At 446 pages, the readers focus can be a bit challenged with sporadic lulls.

4.0 out of 5 stars Evil Never Looked So Good June 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I hesitated on reading The Deception Dance because I was skeptical of the premise. "A DEMON HELL-BENT ON POSSESSING HER A KILLER AVOWED TO KEEPING HER FROM HELL'S GRASP A GIRL DETERMINED NOT TO FALL IN LOVE " Really?

Despite the obvious shortcomings in the book's introduction, The Deception Dance managed to snag my attention from the start. Raven is in Italy with her sister Linnie and Linnie's best friend Chauncey. In Italy Raven meets two men, sexy Andras, and handsome guy-next door type Nicholas. Raven begins to trust Andras after he saves her life, but there's something about him that both attracts and repels her.

After Raven's attack, Nicholas talks the girls into visiting his castle in Sweden. The visit sets off a chain of events that will find Raven in the center of a fight between good and evil.

Raven is torn between two men who both share a secret that she's determined to discover. She's inexplicably drawn to dangerously sexy Andras, but is also terrified of him at times. She can't find a reason NOT to trust Nicholas, but is unable to because she suspects he's hiding something.

Deception Dance is a slow read that still manages to be entertaining and intriguing. Rita Stradling does an excellent job of building the cast of characters and I found myself becoming vested in their lives. Unfortunately, there are times that I was in a state of complete disbelief over some of the decisions Raven made within the story. The ending was also both unbelievable and unrealistic causing the story itself to lose credibility. I do recommend The Deception Dance, but with reservations. It's an entertaining read that will definitely keep your interest, but a thinning plot and unraveling storyline will leave you wondering if the writer lost the basis for the story, or if you missed something along the way.
