There's a raw truth in this film, a penetrating insight into the courage of an ordinary sailor who becomes the hero of his own life.
Nature takes no prisoners, the fishermen who sail the waters off Iceland understand and accept this reality. While The Deep is the inspiring story of one sailor's harrowing fight for survival against overwhelming odds, the stoic bravery of his shipmates as they head out to sea aware of the risks inherent in their profession is also moving. The intercut scenes of the 1974 volcanic eruption underscore the force of nature as an unpredictable ever present danger.
Olafsson's performance is luminous & must be seen to be fully appreciated; he channels Gulli's strength & vulnerability, making him into a credible hero/man.
Kormakur's work just keeps getting stronger. He has talent, vision & guts.

This movie was so compelling to watch. Iceland is such an inhospitable country on so many levels. The freezing cold sea, the rough volcanic terrain...and these elements were major characters of this drama. This movie was based on actual events which made it so much more appealing to watch. The actor who played the main character Gulli, was very understated. It worked very well with the chaos and helplessness taking place. The movie is sub-titled, which is quickly forgotten as the movie moves forward. I loved this movie!

Beautiful, true-seeming, life-affirming. Clearly a work of love on the part of director, cast, production crew, all. Like the best theatre, it takes you apart and reassembles you just a little bit changed, your world larger for the encounter.

I enjoy Icelandic films, and I was looking forward to this movie. I would like to give this move 3.5 stars. I enjoyed the first two-thirds of the movie, but the last thirty minutes--the exploration of why--was less interesting to me. The movie could have ended earlier to suit my tastes, but the performance of the lead actor (see him again in small roles in Banshee and True Detective) was excellent, the flashback showing the history of the village was interesting, and the scenes on the boat and in the water were nicely shot, The movie also avoided melodrama which I doubt any American remake would be able to achieve.

Reading the subtitles didn't interrupt with the story line. This actually happened, in the end of the film scattered through the credits they have inserted the original news media clips of the young man in the hospital. Very moving and impressive. A little bar language, and such common between men.
