3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, September 8, 2009
I got this book to broaden my understanding of actuality from a holistic perspective. Unfortunately, the text is a bit condescending in the sense that the author "tells you how things are" with no explanation of how she came to the understanding or why she thinks it.

I would guess that many of the ideas and lessons the author shares were conclusions of her own experiences, both negative and positive, yet the conclusions have a very "emotional" construct in that they are often very irrational.

I spent hours just thinking about each chapter, I understood the points the author was trying to make, some of the points were just incorrect.

4.0 out of 5 stars This little book is dynamite!, December 14, 2009
I am quite honestly sick and tired of self help books that are great on hype but have little to do with reality. "The Secret" is a great example:very well written,(ideal for anyone with a short attention span)with a powerful marketing machine behind it,(hence it's massive success) but as far as I am concerned it's a motivational/inspirational book and should not be classified as a self help book, because the book hasn't got enough substance to be able to help any reader as it's not sufficiently based on reality.Books like "The Secret" are not selling the reader anything new, except regurgitated pop psychology babble that has been around for a while, but is presented with a fresh marketing spin.
I like to compare "The Secret" as a recipe being sold of a magical dish: all the ingredients are included in this sold recipe, except for the one ingredient that makes the dish magical(or special)!
While I don't claim that Postma's book is the missing link to "The Secret", she does approach life is a way that is more reality bound. She has a very practical attitude towards life, which is refreshing. She's not advocating that the law of attraction boils down to wanting something or focusing your attention on that one thing till you get it. Instead she is saying that we all have the responsibility to spend the time getting to know ourselves, understanding why we want what we want and following through with action. She also encourages people to find their own way in life in what works best for them in making their lives all they want it to be.And that concept appeals to me because it's acknowledging the reader as an individual instead of advocating the one size fits all mentality.I have just turned 40 and I was reading this book when my birthday came round and I realised that my life needs a major overhaul in all departments, but it also left me hopeful that I can change but there are no shortcuts to getting your life sorted, you need to put in the work to get the results. I can safely say that in my 15 years of reading self help books there have been 2 books that were pivotal to me in transitional periods in my life. These two books REALLY helped me in a way that I never thought possible. This dynamite book is that book no.2!

After reading so many new age books, I was surprised that this book did have a few new shoots of knowledge that I had not previously learned, much better for the gen pop than Rhonda Byrnes secret, more deeper explaination as to how to create the life you want, I guess thats why its called the deepest secret lol
