Review

5 Stars by Mamta Madhavan for Readers' Favorite:

You find yourself being taken on a journey of action packed adventure with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge. The story line is unique and interesting and the book will appeal to adult readers too...All the characters are vivid and well described...The book is fast paced and...has a lot of action and magical characters with magical names that hold the fascination of any child. The story includes everything under the sun - magic, pirates, adventure, fantasy, dwarfs, and talking animals that will captivate the reader.

About the Author

Gregory S. Slomba grew up in Connecticut reading The Phantom Tollbooth, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings and dreaming of being a children's author.

He studied English at the University of Dayton, and then worked as a banker for 20 years, taking care of other people's money. Somewhere in there he also took four years out and worked as an editor for a flooring trade magazine. He got to go to some neat places (Las Vegas, Arizona, Spain) to write about carpet, hardwood and ceramic tiles. Now he designs and writes training courses for bankers.

He likes to read fantasy, historical fiction, history, middle grade and young adult literature, biographies, sports history, and anything else that seems interesting. The Lord of the Rings is my favorite book, followed closely by The Hobbit, The Chronicles of Narnia, Redwall, and Harry Potter.

Greg lives in Connecticut with his wife, Stephanie and his children, Christian and Abigail.

As a fifth grade teacher I am very familiar with the middle grade genre. I recently read The Deliverers: Sharky and the Jewel and was pleasantly surprised by the fast pace of the story. The action starts from the first chapter and picks up from there. The author uses clever names and creates interesting characters. The main character, Eric, is smart and braver than he knows. He has to rely on friends to help him solve the problems that arise and this seemed very real to me. Kids will definitely be able to relate to Eric, as well as the friends he encounters along the way. I think that this book will appeal to anyone from 4th grade through 8th grade - although older kids and adults will also find it to be an exciting read! A story that includes pirates, talking animals, dwarfs, and ancient magic will captivate anyone that enjoys fantasy. A great way to introduce kids to the fantasy genre!

Audio version (I read both)
When I found out there was an audio version of The Deliverers: Sharky and the Jewel I was excited because I love to listen to books while I relax on my bed or clean my room. Jimm Singer is the narrator of the audio book and he helps the characters come alive. I wasn't sure if his voices would match the ones I already had in my head and I have to say he did a fabulous job. I enjoyed the voices and the story! As I listened I could distinguish between Stig, the owl (awesome English accent), Eric, Kate, and of course, Sharky. There are many characters and he did each one justice. Jimm Singer did a wonderful job with his pacing and kept the story moving. I never felt that the audio was too fast or too slow, it was just right.

I've never been one for the fantasy stories or visits to Middle Earth, but having read this as a referral from a friend, I must say, WELL DONE. Gregory's grasp of creating visual situations and comparisons is nothing short of genius. Written for the young or the young at heart? You decide but don't let this bargain pass you buy. I look forward to more great journeys from this accomplished author. You can't go wrong here.

When I asked my 10 year old daughter to read this book she was a little hesitant to do so. When she finally got started on it, she couldn't put it down. The only time she did was to tell me about what happened in each chapter. The combination of fantasy, adventure and relatable situations makes this book one for the family to share. My daughter shared it with me and I loved it too.

Having recently finished student teaching in a fifth grade class, I have been reading a lot of books at this reading level. When I came across this book, The Delivers: Sharky and the Jewel, I was instantly sucked in. The book is amazing right from the first page and I often found it difficult to put down. This book is a true fantasy and one I greatly enjoyed.

This is a great book for both boys and girls - good story with lots of adventure. The places that the characters travel to are vividly described and very interesting. The characters have their own adversities to overcome, but work together for the good of all. The story is age appropriate and I recommend it to anyone looking for a book for the 8-12 year old range. My 10 year old daughter highly recommends it, as well!

"A fantastic, poignant, and flawless story. This book made me want to dream more and be a 12-year-old again, and join the main character's next journey. Yes, I want a sequel. :D" - Ara of My Book and My Coffee

The copy of this book, The Deliverers: Sharky and the Jewel, was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Seriously, I don't have any complaints about this book. As in nothing. That rarely happens. It's kinda strange to me as well, and I'm very happy about it. Let's talk about the story. The story, as you've read from the description, is about a boy named Eric Scott, a talking owl named Stig (I love this bird's name - wait till you find out its real name), a girl from another world named Kate Endria, and an exiled dwarf named Hallo... Tosis. Yep, his last name was Tosis. :D Fun read, I tell ya. The two, Eric and Stig, were sent to a journey by the Gatekeeper, to a world that apparently needs their help, or at least someone's help and save them from Sharky, the mean pirate, and his gang. How will they save them? That was one of my questions as well when I first started reading the book. I mean, he is only twelve years old, and it's not like he has superpowers or anything. Plus, he will only be accompanied by an owl; yes, he talks, but what can that do? Those are my thoughts at first.

Well, the thing that I liked most about this book is that it explains (part of how it is written) the things that you, as a reader, need to know so you can connect and understand what has happened, what's happening and what's about to happen. I found the writing and the flow of the story to be flawless (I know, I always thought that there's no such thing - but then again, that's just me).
