Purists might not acknowledge Aretha as a blues singer, but so what? Even if The Delta Meets Detroit is at heart another way of raiding the Queen of Soul's catalog for niche-market sales, it's a convincer. Drawn from her Atlantic albums of the '60s and early '70s, these 16 tracks belong next to the work of Dinah Washington, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and the rest of the great urban blueswomen and -men. Even the songs Aretha borrows from others' repertoires ("Night Life," "Drown in My Own Tears") become her property: just listen to how "The Thrill Is Gone" here becomes a meditation on the phrase "free at last." --Rickey Wright

Biography

“There are singers,” said Ray Charles, “then there is Aretha. She towers above the rest. Others are good, but Aretha is great. She’s my only sure-enough sister.”

Since the moment Aretha stepped to the pulpit at her father’s famed New Bethel Baptist Church as a young girl singing in the great gospel tradition, the world has recognized her as a musical ... Read more in Amazon's Aretha Franklin Store

I have nearly a dozen Aretha albums and this is my favorite. The opening cut is enough to buy the album on its own. To add the other 15 tracks is a bonus. I have most of the albums from which the tracks were taken but this is a must have for an Aretha fan. This is the most passionate blues album I have heard. As humans we must feel for Aretha and her many heartaches. As fans, we must thank her struggles because they have produced one of the greatest female singers in history.

...see,...yall can call this the blues if you want to, but in truth this is soul music delivered unto us by the best female vocalist to have ever...uh...vocalled.
fa'real, now, you can feel her spirit just aswingin back and forth between her filthy pains and dirty lusts...it hits you dead smack in the middle of your chest, sinks in, settles, rattles, vibrates and hums. the love and hurt felt here picks me up by my ankles and swings all 275 pounds of me around and around until i give in and feel it! this is some good stuff...just get it! if you love aretha and like the blues or soul music...then this wont dissappoint, promise.

though aretha franklin is not often heralded as a blues artist, this collection certainly makes the case for such an inclusion. better than many other collections of aretha's work, _the delta meets detroit: aretha's blues_ gathers songs around a central theme, providing an encapsulated investigation of one of the many sides of the queen of soul. really, what is soul if not the union of blues and gospel? and for an artist whose career has spanned as many genres as years, it's nice to see a collection that doesn't try to be all things to all people. from the cover art to the material, this is one classy album.

I bought this CD on a whim at a used CD store knowing absolutely nothing about it and what a great purchase it turned out to be. Anyone who likes a smooth blues sound coupled with a powerful voice will love this disc.

Although known primarily as a Soul singer, Aretha Franklin usually found space on each of her early Atlantic albums for at least a few serious, hardcore Blues numbers. Deep down sad, gut-wrenching Blues. The best of these is collected here. There is only one song here that wasn't on her readily available releases, but that one track ( "Taking Another Man's Place" ) makes this an essential purchase for fans of Aretha and for fans of the Blues. Incredible vocal performances ( this is, after all, the Queen in her prime ), terrific musical performances (with guests like guitarists Eric Clapton and Duane Allman ) and inspired song choices make this one of the best Aretha Franklin compilations available.

Being an avid fan of Aretha for over 20 years, I have heard most of these songs before. I was really jazzed to find this particular collection of her blues songs all on one CD. I had to have it! I sing to it in the shower, listen while driving, and never tire of her powerful voice and well constructed vocal & musical backgrounds. I recommend this one to anyone who loves the blues, jazz, or just Aretha. It spans at least a decade of her career and is geared more towards musicians who appreciate a great voice with feeling. Get it!

The Delta Meets Detroit: Aretha's Blues. YOU GOT THAT RIGHT! People forget that Aretha Franklin used to sing the blues--and boy could she sing it. She didn't try to sing it like the blues men of the day either. She didn't have to "growl" like KoKo Taylor or Etta James. Aretha just went straight "church" with her blues and sang it as if she was singing for all women who knew something about it. Not only did Aretha sing the blues, she could play it too. She was a phenomenal piano player; always, always, you could hear her gospel roots. The infusion of her gospel roots with the blues is just as riveting as her idol's--Ray Charles. She "rips" it with Mabel John's You're Just Taking Up Another Man's Place (ha!--she'll have ya shoutin') and then goes to church with a simple little "ditty" called You Are My Sunshine. Got a man you need to tell off girls--listen to Be as Good to Me as I am to You. Listen to Aretha wail "...if you can't find it in your heart to do for me, then just don't darken my front door..." She goes on--"using my time, my heart, my love day after day..."

Although some of the songs are on other CDs that I have of Aretha's, this CD is still a nice compilation with some OUTSTANDING surprises (specifically the Mabel John piece).

This CD is like a rare jewel. Got the blues? Play this CD and go to church with Aretha--you won't have the blues for long.
