Review

"The author's writing style amazed me. The story was told as simply and matter-of-factly as though it was a  newspaper report. She was able to get inside the heads of her characters to an incredible degree and expose their vulnerabilities, their insecurities, their fears, and even mental illness without flinching." Overall 5 stars, plot 4.5 stars, characters 4.5 stars. --Red Adept Reviews

"Suburban Noir ... I would recommend it to all who enjoy a good psychological thriller made more menacing by its everyday setting." --Jane Steen, The Book Book

"Kept me turning the pages". --E-Finds: Books, Music, Video and other On-Line Finds

"Amazingly full of tension from the very first page." --Sabrina Ogden, My Friends Call Me Kate Book Review Blog

"Most telling is that I would like a sequel." --Suzanne Conboy-Hill, Finding Fiction

Product Description

Haunted by fear after witnessing a brutal attack on her mother and the disintegration of her parents' marriage, Amy Lewis is determined to protect her own marriage from even the hint of a threat. Her fears for the safety of herself and her twin daughters are enflamed when a woman in her neighborhood is murdered.

Charlotte Whittington simply wants a safe neighborhood for her daughter, and a second chance to follow her dream of expressing her artistic vision through photography. She quickly realizes that she's forgotten how stifling suburbia can be.

Troubled by fears that her son is doomed to remain an outsider because he hates soccer, Rachel's husband is unconcerned, so she seeks solace in her friends. When the close-knit group of soccer moms starts to unravel, she is forced to choose between the man she loves and her best friend.

In a world where suburban women, tormented by obsessive fears for their children, are on a collision course, who will survive?

Suburban Noir -- where the mundane is menacing.

The Dark Side of Suburbia January 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
"...[A]ll the beautiful yards and parks make it look so peaceful and quiet. That can make you feel safe and it's not always safe." ~The Demise of the Soccer Moms

Cathryn Grant writes Suburban Noir, and in her debut novel she successfully reveals the dark side of Suburbia, the illusions of perfection, the insecurities, the vague - or not so vague - threats.

In The Demise of the Soccer Moms, Grant introduces us to a group of women bonded by a sport that is sometimes more about fitting in than it is about becoming an athlete -- at least for Amy, Charlotte, and Rachel (Grant's main characters). Suburban culture offers an easy life as long as everyone follows the norms. In Grant's novel, we see what happens when the newcomer, Charlotte, refuses to follow suit. In a story full of tension - so much so that I wasn't sure which Soccer mom would unravel first - Grant shows us how easily the picture perfect world of Suburbia can fall apart, and how quickly danger ensues.

This is a wonderful first novel from Cathryn Grant, and I can't wait to read her next one!

"The Demise of the Soccer Moms" is a book that takes chick-lit and turns it around, blindfolds it, and drags it through the cleat-mottled turf of a soccer field.

This is a great debut novel. Grant has a way of layering her world wth chilling details that *seem* ordinary, but aren't. Her characters are beautifully fleshed out and detailed. Without ever telling us what, exactly, is wrong with them, she fills their conversations and observations with enough clues to let the reader figure it out.

The brilliance of this book, though, is how the tension climbs with each chapter, but it climbs so gradually that the reader doesn't even really notice until the heart is racing and the palms are sweating. With every chapter of this book, my heart rate climbed a little further.

Fans of "Mad Men" would very much enjoy this book. There's a similar quality to the world--a perfect, whitewashed world on the outside, but dark secrets and disturbia on the inside. A really satisfying read, and a great debut.

Read this book!

terrific debut January 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
great read taut story that had me anxious to see what would happen next so sad on so many levels-childhood trauma and lasting effects, parental fears, marraige insecurity....and to me ultimately how people are so overly concerned about what things look like on the outside they are blinded to what is happening just beneath the surface. cannot wait for ms grant's next novel
