Editorial Reviews

The Deputy - The Complete Series - 76 episodes on 12 DVDs! So begins The Deputy, starring the great Henry Fonda (The Grapes of Wrath) in his first recurring role on television. Marshal Simon Fry is a lawman who will do whatever it takes to keep the peace in Silver City, Arizona, and Fry's sometimes reluctant deputy, Clay McCord (Allen Case), is a sharp shooting storekeeper who shuns violence whenever he can, but who is persuaded to step in to help the aging Silver City Marshal Herk Lamson (Wallace Ford) when Simon is out of town. Other recurring roles are played by veteran western actors Read Morgan, Phil Tully and Addison Richards. Among the guest stars joining them are some of the best actors of their time, including Lee Van Cleef (A Fistful of Dollars), Alan Hale, Jr. (Gilligan's Island), James Coburn (The Magnificent Seven), Stacy Keach, Sr., Jason Robards, Jr. and many more. The Deputy was produced by Norman Lear (All In The Family) and features a great jazz guitar score by Jack Marshall. Although sometimes out of town keeping the peace in the wild expanse of Arizona Territory, Fonda narrates every episode.

I WANTED to give The Deputy - the Complete Series 5 stars so bad....the video & audio is very good & I have no complaints here. My only complaint is that I have found two episodes in Season 2 that chopped off the credits of the show, and I have to ask Timeless Media Group WHY??? However, don't let this deter you from adding this series to your collection, it is an EXCELLENT show & I treasure having it in my classic TV show library.

Update: I emailed Timeless Media Group about the above concern & they replied as follows: "For many of the archival films we release, the most problematic elements are the program opens, commercial breaks and closing credits. If there is significant damage to a film, it usually is present in these areas. For the open, we can usually use a clean copy from another episode and that will suffice, but the closing credits are specific to each episode, so we can't just swap them around."

I already had the previous release of The Deputy, and it sucked. This box set, however, is everything the other is not. Obviously, the quality varies, but every single one of the episodes in this boxset is at least good, quite viewable, thank you. I am very pleased with my purchase of this one. Thanks, guys for the upgrade. It's exactly what I wanted.

great effort, far superior to first offering. I thoroughly enjoyed this show. when it was on Tv, it seems to me Universal put out some of the best westerns on television. Timeless I applaud you, two thumbs up.I'm still amazed how the writers put so detail into a 30 minute show. Henry Fonda was fantastic in this role, you could just tell, he was having fun with that role.

I received the set of "The Deputy the complete series" and now have watched some of the 76 episodes, I must admit that I can't remember watching this series when it was on TV, but being very keen on westerns my wife and I purchased this set on both the description by Amazon and the reviews of the previous owners, this turned out to be a very good choice. As with previous purchases Timeless Media Group have done it again, I can not fault the quality of the picture, sound or the presentation. This will not be our last purchase of sets from both Amazon and Timeless Media Group, to both keep up the very good work.

A partial release of The Deputy came out awhile ago, so I was very happy to receive my Amazon recommendation that this new, all-episodes collection had come out. We've been going through these episodes several at a time, with regular TV so frequently weak. The episodes are short but well acted, produced, and filmed. One pleasant surprise is that the sound is fine, too, and with a series this old, that's a real accomplishment for the restoration team. Stories are almost all serious; you don't see the characters thrown into silly, weak attempts at humorous episodes as happened so often with Bonanza or Laredo. Sometimes a story suddenly wraps up, but that can happen with any show. It's not The Henry Fonda Show, if that's what you're looking for, but he's in almost every episode, spending several minutes on screen as the Chief Marshall guiding his shopkeeper sidekick and deputizing him to solve the task of the day. It's the only show I can think of where the shopkeeper is portrayed as equal to the task of tackling the bad guys; usually that's reserved to grizzled, bar-busting gunslinging tough guys, occasionally overwritten to be superhuman. There is one small drawback, not the fault of the writers so much as of American portrayals of Western culture at that time: that's the Gabby Hayes/'Detective' Watson buffoon sitting sheriff, who's generally just in the way, getting bumped aside (wisely) so Henry and his real (part time) deputy can restore order. As a writer's gimmick to lighten the mood, he's a minor irritant, like fuzz on the screen, easily disregarded in the context of the storyline. Today we watched eight episodes in a row, enjoying the entire stretch. I highly recommend this set for fans of Westerns. The Deputy - The Complete Series - 76 episodes! 12 DVD Set!

It was easy to order and delivery was fast. This series was one of the best of its time and still holds your attention. Henry Fonda is always charming and Wallace Ford is great as the aging sheiff and Allen Case as the Deputy gives a very real performance. Great to see it again, I love it.

I am very disappointed in this product - the sound is very poor you can barely hear it even after you turn the sound up to the last notch!

The Deputy - The Complete Series is a great series I didn't see when it originally ran because I was never home at the time it ran.
