Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Rachel Zeffira's stunning debut album, The Deserters, is both beautiful and beguiling--a gauzy, rapturous tour de force that mines both Zeffira's classical training as well as the pop sensibilities she displayed as one half of Cat's Eyes. It might recall at times the baroque pop of John Cale and the hazy experimentation of My Bloody Valentine, but at heart it's a largely unclassifiable record that stands defiantly alone and apart from its peers. The most striking sonic component of the record are the orchestrations--a central feature of what elevates Zeffira's music into the extraordinary.

Review

''Resplendent with oboes, mellotrons, cellos and other classical intstruments and made with help from members of Toy and S.C.U.M., it's haunting baroque pop.'' --Brooklyn Vegan

'' > --Brooklyn Vegan

''Partly recorded at Abbey Road Studios, and showcasing a style of orchestral but subtle, baroque pop that often evokes the quiet world of Nick Drake, 'The Deserters' is impressively refined and confident for an artist seemingly navigating this territory for the first time.'' --Fader, March 7, 2013

''...unequivocally demanding of your attention.'' (9/10) --Bbc

In the genre of Enya, it has that etheral, angelic quality that sets it apart from the ordinary, everyday pop music. It lifts me up and transports me to a higher plane. I feel as if I'm floating on the wings of the songs.Listen to a sample and you'll know what I mean. Buy it!

I bought this CD, loaded them on to my iPod and I forgot about them. Some months later at work with my iPod on random I heard Rachel Zeffira's music for the first time. I loved the music so much that I took it off random and played her album exclusively. My office is extremely hectic, full of type-A people, myself included. I was totally overwhelmed by the lushness of her voice that I had to pause and take it all in. Thereafter, I played the album three times while my colleagues were at lunch and I gazed at the Manhattan skyline looking at the clouds slowly moving by.

Rachel Zeffira has an exquisite voice that melts into your soul. She seems to have trained her voice to be a sonic device rather than merely singing words. Sometimes he blends with the instruments on the album and adds to the sonic fabric. At other moments she soars above the music as the arpeggios from the synthesizers support her.

The album is nicely passed with fast, upbeat songs, following slower, more contemplative ones. Some songs have a hint of Phillip Glass with the assorted layers of repeated note patterns. However her rhythms inevitably lead to the tonic, and the journey there is often slow, seductive and delightful.

I can easily see myself looking for any future albums by Rachel Zeffira every time I log on Amazon.

In my opinion, this song is stronger than Enya's Only Time. For me the song hit hard on personal issues. The arrangement and mix down is absolute greatness. I can see Rachel will be on David Lettermen within the year.

This is very melodic, pretty music but nothing that really stands out - great for just enjoyable background music though. I much preferred Cat's Eye (album where she does duets). That one is great!

I'd never heard her sing before until I listened to her interview on NPR. I thought her voice enchanting. I ordered a CD and my son still plays LPs, so I ordered an LP for his gift.
