4.0 out of 5 stars "Life is just a murdertrain a comin' " December 8, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Length: 3:57 Mins
When "Dethalbum" was released, this deluxe edtiion was almost nowhere to be found. The demand had been underestimated and for several weeks following it's release, this CD could not be obtained unless you were willing to pay $100 from one of the bloodsuckers who managed to snag one on release day. I was not. In spite of this difficulty, "Dethalbum" became the highest charting death metal album of all time. That, my friends, is impressive, particularly for a band that doesn't really exist.

Fans of bands like of Arch Enemy, Cannibal Corpse, and Slayer will eat this album up even if they haven't seen Metalocalypse, the show that this CD serves as a soundtrack for. "Go Into the Water", "Fansong", and "Awaken" remain my favorites along with "Dethharmonic" which I specifically mention in the review. "Thunderhorse" (which was featured in the video game "Guitar Hero 2"), "Go Forth and Die", and some of the others are still great, but they worked better with the visuals accompanying them on the show. All in all, an awesome album that is only held back by the fact that the half-a$zed deluxe edition content seems like a rip-off in hindsight.

4 1/2 stars, rounded down in the spirit of brutality!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Trouble September 28, 2007
Format:Audio CD
I was rather disappointed when Amazon informed me that they couldn't get me a copy, and even more upset when I discovered that no online stores seemed to have the deluxe edition in stock. Yesterday my girlfriend found the deluxe edition on the shelf at Hot Topic, and I've heard from others that stores have copies on their shelves, so I'm rather confused as to why nobody has it available online.

As for the album itself, it was definitely worth the trouble. I've been incredibly disappointed with metal albums for the last few years, but this one is incredible. It's rather sad that Brendon Small can throw something together that blows the "serious" metal bands out of the water.

My favorite track has got to be Kill You off of the bonus disc. I'd love for Pickel's to do his own solo album :)

In short the album is brutal and I highly recommend it. Hopefully Dethklok will be around for a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go Forth And Buy! October 3, 2007
By Mike
Format:Audio CD
I still can't get over the fact I got this CD for under $10 before tax.

So I saw that Dethklok was going to release an album. I was like "Well, I like the show, but a CD, is it going to be good?" I was admittedly skeptical. When I found out extreme drumming legend Gene Hoglan was going to play on the album as Pickles the Drummer, I started to think "Hey, this should be interesting." Once I found out Brendon Small was a graduate of Berklee, a world-renown music school, my spirits rose. FYI, Brendon plays on the album as vocalist Nathan Explosion, guitarists Swisgaar Skwigell and Toki Wartooth, and bass guitarist William Murderface; in addition to keyboard parts uncredited to the band members.

Well, then I heard the album and was a believer.

The album is too well written and well composed for music that's supposed to be considered made by a fictitious band. The songs are epic in terms of sound and texture, but aren't really that long. There's plenty of double bass, the solos are better than half of the "real" metal bands in existence, and unexpectedly, this is the first time I think I've ever heard someone sing in a death growl where the lyrics were still intelligible! There isn't a weak moment on the CD.

The only reason I didn't give this album a 5 star review was due to the lack of an up-tempo song. If there would have been at least one song that would have had some blistering speed to it (double bass aside, of course), even if it was 30 seconds long, that would have made this album a perfect metal album. That however may be asking a bit much, considering that even with two dudes doing all the music, this is still one of the better metal albums of 2007.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spinal Tap for the next generation September 29, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Heavy metal gets animated! That's right all you headbangers, we have the world's first animated heavy metal band. I must say these boys from Dethklok can shred. Well, I should say Mr. Brendon Small, the creator, lyricist, guitar/bass player and vocalist of Dethklok can shred. Brendon Small has definitely created something new in the world of heavy metal, and in my opinion he has done a thrashing good job. Brendon learned to play guitar from Berklee College of music. The guitar work on "The Dethalbum" shows his impressive skill. He is also a comedian. His comical influence shows heavily in the lyrics of Dethklok and mainly in the animated series the "Metalocalypse" which is on adult swim. The songs on this cd are all featured in the series.

Brendon Small has basically made Dethklok a one man band except for the drums which is done by Gene Hoglan, who I believe was in the band Strapping Young Lad. Being basically a one-man band, I doubt we will ever see these songs played live, unless Mr. Small wants to hire a bunch of musicians to go on tour. But I'm sure that's not his intention. Although with how popular this cd is becoming I wouldn't count that idea out.

As far as the music on this album it's not bad at all. In fact I'm quite impressed. I was very skeptical; I figured "oh well how good can music be from a fictional animated metal band be?" The answer is heavy as a freight train. Brendon has created a good tribute to heavy metal with comical edge. I wouldn't necessarily call this album a straight death metal record. Although the vocals are guttural the music is basic heavy metal with many different influences from each metal sub group. But they defiantly have a death metal influence.

Ummm...
I'm not sure. I pre-ordered one pretty early and it's been stricken from my Amazon account. I think it's a release hiatus rather than a deficiency of stock, otherwise they wouldn't have removed it from my purchases.

These are totally re-written and re-recorded in the studio with Brendon Small doing all lead, rythm, and bass guitars and all vocals, and the awesome Gene Hoglan on drums. They are full length songs (with the exception of the Deththeme. It's the same 30 second opening from the show but... Read more
