I want to say that this album is dark and brooding, but it's not really. There are a lot of songs related to pain and suffering, and a lot of the people are in a really bad spot, but it almost always resolves on a positive note (despite the minor key). The songs are sparse with a stand-up bass leading the charge, and the singer does a great job of letting the emotion shine through the song without being "emotive."

The one thing that took me a little bit to get used to was the change of style/tempo in mid-song for a lot of these songs. After a few listens, though, that became one of my favorite parts. It's a great way of letting the story lead the song rather than shoehorn one into the other.

This album is easily one of my favorite of right now, and I strongly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing variety of styles; consistently meaningful., February 6, 2011

Brown Bird certainly aren't for everyone, like any band. Unlike most bands, however, they employ such an impressive and sometimes downright odd mix of styles and tones that the listener will experience unique sounds from dark to light, from gloomy to foot-tapping (and sometimes both). The sheer poetry in nearly every second of the record shines on its own, musical merit aside; deep in emotion and vivid in delivery, it may just send chills up one's spine.

I cannot recommend Brown Bird, and especially this album - perhaps their most mature, grown-up effort to date - highly enough.
