From Booklist

Anti-Semitism has often been compared to a deadly virus, characterized by long latent periods and then reemerging in new and even more virulent forms. Goldhagen, who has specialized in provocative, controversial works on the Holocaust and anti-Semitism, examines the virus in its latest, terrifying form. Per this author, anti-Semitism has broken free of its centuries-old host in Europe and now infects institutions and individuals across the world. Facilitated by the global nature of modern communication, the old blood libels, distortions, and wild conspiracy theories about Jews are now widely believed and expressed in places as far flung as Malaysia, West Africa, and Pakistan, none of which have indigenous Jewish populations. Goldhagen maintains that international organizations, including the United Nations and some so-called human-rights groups, use the mask of anti-Zionism or opposition to Israel to nurture and reinforce hatred of Jews. At the same time, there has been a resurgence of anti-Semitism in traditional places in Europe, and it transcends the political barriers of the Left and the Right. As in his earlier works, Goldhagen tends to paint with too broad a brush, but this is still an important investigation of an undeniably dangerous phenomenon. --Jay Freeman

"No other writer has held mass murderers, deniers of truth, and propagators of hate to a higher standard of moral accountability than Daniel Jonah Goldhagen....His latest, The Devil that Never Dies, doubtlessly will shatter the way people think about anti-Semitism---both in its past incarnations and present day existence....When the world's manmade atrocities, moral failures, and blatant hypocrisies occur, he has proven himself time and again to be a righteous chronicler on behalf of the persecute and the dead."
---Thane Rosenbaum, Huffington Post

"A frightening exposition on how anti-Semitism has become a global phenomenon....Devil is bursting with information and insight."
---Neal Gendler, American Jewish World

"Former Harvard professor Goldhagen comes out swinging in this frontal assault on anti-Semitism and its practitioners and does not pause for breath until the final page.... A frightening photograph of a mutable demon so many fail to recognize and continue to embrace."
--- Kirkus Reviews

"An important new book....A chilling explication of the explosion of anti-Semitism in the last two decades, fueled by the Internet and other modern means of global communications, as well as a sophisticated analysis of the inter-related international institutions and political trends that underpin it. It is essential reading."
--- Rick Richman, Commentary

"Effective and disturbing....Rhetorically and sometimes physically violent anti-Semitism over the past dozen years or so is shocking in part because it does not seem to shock."
--- Jeffrey Goldberg, New York Times

"Explosive....Goldhagen's main points are hard to contradict."
--- David Mikics, Tablet Magazine

"Daniel Goldhagen's new book hits hard. This tour de force makes a chillingly compelling case that global anti-Semitism on the rise....Goldhagen's material can overwhelm and be tough going for the faint of heart. Yet his passionate compulsion to make his case beyond a shadow of a doubt is understandable, and he does so with brilliance....In The Devil That Never Dies, he does everything within his formidable intellectual power to confront anti-Semitism and make us aware that this devil is real."
--- Sharon Rosen Leib, San Diego Jewish Journal

"Important and timely....The dangers Goldhagen outlines in this brilliant work should sound a clarion call for governmental and societal intervention."
---Benjamin Weinthal, Jerusalem Post

"An in-depth look at anti-Semitism around the world."
--- Vox Tablet

More About the Author

When in 1996 I published Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust, I was transformed unexpectedly, and almost instantly, into the author of a #1 international bestseller of a book published in 15 languages, and the unwitting progenitor of an impassioned international "Goldhagen Debate," which has since become a fixed part of the western, and especially the German, cultural landscape. The book, about the perpetrators of the Holocaust and ordinary Germans' role in it, told buried truths about the tens upon tens of thousands who carried out Hitler's plan to exterminate the Jews: these perpetrators were willing executioners, willing because they were antisemites who believed that exterminating Jews was right and necessary. Survivors of the Holocaust -- the people who learned of the perpetrators' beliefs firsthand from the perpetrators themselves -- heartily applauded the book, as did younger Germans and people elsewhere who hankered for these tabooed subjects to be finally discussed openly, even as some others clung to various untenable positions with the effect of denying the humanity of the killers and of exonerating them. Immediately, upon its publication, its contributions were recognized. The New York Times wrote: "Masterly...One of those rare new works that merit the appellation landmark." The Philadelphia Inquirer judged it: "The most important book ever published about the Holocaust...Eloquently written, meticulously documented, impassioned...A model of moral and scholarly integrity." It was honored as a National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist and Time named it one of the two best non-fiction books of the year. In country after country, similar views and admiration greeted Hitler's Willing Executioners -- as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in Germany conveyed with its summation of the effect of the publication of Hitler's Willing Executioners, which it endorsed as "The most spectacular nonfiction success of this year." With time, as a flood of scholarly studies have come out which have substantiated Hitler's Willing Executioners' conclusions, more and more who have read the book's vast amount of new research and evidence and its challenging perspectives have come to appreciate and accept what the Holocaust's survivors had known all along. And so, a front page article in the New York Times on 15 October 2010 announced that the revolution in understanding that Hitler's Willing Executioners produced about the Holocaust has unequivocally become, just fifteen years after the book's publication, the consensus view in Germany. The establishment German Historical Museum in Berlin has opened a major exhibition that confirms and builds upon the conclusions of Hitler's Willing Executioners: "This exhibition is about Hitler and the Germans -- meaning the social and political and individual processes by which much of the German people became enablers, colluders, co-criminals in the Holocaust," said the authoritative Constanze Stelzenmüller, until recently the director of the German Marshall Fund Berlin Office. "That this was so is now a mainstream view, rejected only by a small minority of very elderly and deluded people, or the German extreme right-wing fringe. But it took us a while to get there."

Thus I became a public intellectual, the startling winner of Germany's prestigious Democracy Prize (there have been only six since it was established) awarded only when someone earns it (the previous winner, seven years earlier, was the East Germany democracy movement), with a debate forever a suffix to my name. I have always been determined to write and speak forthrightly about important topics-topics about which many want to hear, even if many others desperately do not want the truth to be heard. Whether it is about Nazism and the Holocaust, powerful institutions' moral duties, or the dangers of Political Islam, I have never held my tongue out of fear of what people, including powerful people, might say.

My most recent project, Worse Than War: Genocide, Eliminationism, and the Ongoing Assault on Humanity, has issued both in a book (which is being published already in eight languages) and a feature length documentary (the first ever to focus on the phenomenon of genocide itself) that had its national broadcast premiere on PBS on April 14. Worse Than War tells people what I have learned about genocides and genocide in my three decades of studying them, explaining not just how to understand their many complex facets, but also how to stop the killing. As Hitler's Willing Executioners did for the Holocaust, Worse Than War poses a powerful challenge to deeply entrenched myths about why genocides happen. It fundamentally reconfigures our understanding of genocide as a global phenomenon and reconceptualizes it as one aspect of a more fundamental form of politics that can be called "eliminationism." I am gratified that Worse Than War, more than a decade in the writing, has already garnered enormous praise, with words such as "magisterial," "pathbreaking," "masterful," "monumental," and "wholly convincing" gracing the reviews.

I hope that you choose to have a look at it. Whether or not you end up agreeing with every conclusion and proposal in Worse Than War, the book and the film offer a plethora of new information and perspectives not just on genocide or eliminationism but on critical aspects of humanity and modernity, society and politics. I hope to rouse your intellect and conscience, even if I at the same time challenge your views about the most foundational matters of politics, society, and human nature.

This book is a courageous effort. It takes on the distorters, the haters, the deniers. It presents a factually- grounded and logically- argued picture of historical anti- Semitism. It opens with a description of the forms Anti- Semitism has taken through the Ages. It devotes a section to describing the historical reality and diversity of situation of the Jewish people. It alarmingly points to the Post- Holocaust revival of Anti- Semitism, and the way new forms of communication including the Internet have aided Anti- Semitism's spread. This spread involves what Goldenhagen sees as a transformation , a globalization of Anti-
Semitism. He does write about American exceptionalism, and argues the U.S. is and has been the least anti- Semitic of all major countries. There has been Anti- Semitism in the U.S. but Goldenhagen labels it 'tame' in comparison to that known in other places.
Goldenhagen exposes the mendacity and distortion which are required for the Anti- Semites to sustain their imaginary pictures of hidden Jewish power and world- conspiracy. It exposes the spread of Anti- Semitism to unexpected places, including the academic world of the West. He shows how it has spread to large populations in countries without Jewish populations, or with very small Jewish populations. It shows how radical Islam has concocted a whole series of historical denials; denial of the reality of the Jewish history in the Holy Land, denial of the Holocaust, denial of the Jewish contribution to Christianity and Islam, denial of the Jewish people's having made any positive contribution to Humanity. It shows the way Israel and the Jewish people are singled out and made the obsession not only of intelligent if disturbed individuals but of as it were respectable institutions.

THE DEVIL THAT NEVER DIES by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen

A bare seven decades after THE WORLD `learned' that six million Jews were systematically murdered by Nazi Germany with impressive efficiency in a relatively short amount of time, Jew-hatred is back in full force - this time on a global scale. In response, Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, the author of HITLER'S WILLING EXECUTIONER has published "THE DEVIL THAT NEVER DIES - The Rise and Threat of Global Antisemitism". It is a much needed book, including in the US where antisemitism has become a taboo in the public sphere and where one may be lulled into the belief that this age-old scourge has lost its deadly force.

It is troubling to read that just like in Germany in the late nineteen hundreds, antisemitism has once again taken a new foothold in academia in the US and even more pronounced in European countries which either collaborated or stood by while the Nazi regime murdered two thirds of its Jews. John Mersheimer and Stephen Walt for instance distribute their specious antisemitism in the guise of respectability and seriousness and use the bogeyman "Israel Lobby" as an example of a nefarious group which takes unfair advantage of non-Jews. The old canards are recycled in a pattern of mind-numbing repetitiveness and are only surprising in their lack of imagination of NOTHING NEW.

In his extensive study, Goldhagen analyzes the singular nature of this particular prejudice and how it reinvents itself year in and year out, decade after decade, century after century to fit new circumstances while staying loyal to its core characteristic: Jews, or THE Jews, are used as the dung heap of any and all human shortcomings AND prejudices, especially in societies which prefer finger pointing to self-criticism.

"The Devil that Never Dies" is a book that needs to be read and taken seriously. It exposes the regrowth of hatred toward the Jew and how it has become expected, accepted, and institutionalized the world over. Goldhagen does a remarkable job of bringing many inconvenient facts to the surface for all to examine. This is a must read for all decent people.

And persuasive enough in its scholarship and arguments to soften the strongest critics of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians. . I found myself startled to sense my views changing... Could I really be becoming Leon Wieseltier thanks to Goldhagen?.

This was the kind of book that would probably make most people uncomfortable, in that the author documents the roots, triggers, and the inevitable rise of antisemitism in today's global society. Prof. Goldhagen approaches the subject by identifying the spread of the most "popular" themes (and memes). Some may be initially labelled as "anti-Zionist" (in that at first glance they appear to be directed only towards Israel and/or Israelis, as opposed to local Jewish communities) but it soon becomes all too apparent that the sources for these items are based on classic antisemitic themes, reworked for a post-modern audience.

Everyone needs to read this book. Unfortunately it is repetitive and the sentence structure is often too long and complex. However, no matter how difficult the read, the facts are daunting. Eliminationist global antisemitism lives, nay, thrives and is being fed and carefully nurtured and manipulated by those with a political goal. This is an excellent well documented text. Some of it may be shocking, but the author pulls no punches. It is not an easy read but should be required reading for Jew and non Jew alike.
