Book Description

Chad Lett is a mute witness to an attempted murder. He suffers from total paralysis, locked within a prison of his own mind. After years of silence, he establishes contact with a young nurse's aid through a single blinking eye, but then she is abducted and a staff member begins to administer dropperfuls of cleaning solution into his communicating eye.

A heart-pounding thriller that will stay with the reader long after the last page is turned, the Devil's Deep is a top rated suspense that travels from the hell of a long-term care facility to the rain forest of Costa Rica. And a crime committed under tropical waters, the dive known as El Bajo del Diablo--the Devil's Deep.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Praise for Michael Wallace's Other Books:

The Righteous
"Deeply engrossing! Michael Wallace delivers the thinking man's thriller while establishing one of the freshest male leads in crime fiction--Jacob Christianson, an aspiring doctor and cult elder's favored son. Jacob's analytic nature has him questioning everything, including the nature of God and the sexist politics of polygamy. It also makes him a perfect fit to track down a killer whose grisly crimes threaten Jacob's community, family, and soon, his very life." --Lisa Gardner, New York Times bestselling author of Live to Tell

"Wallace authoritatively and unsparingly tears open the veil shrouding a Utah polygamist community and its secret oaths of blood atonement, temple sacrifice, and angels with drawn swords. Inside we find a riveting thriller that recaptures everything lost from the original American religion."
--Jeffrey Anderson, National bestselling, International Thriller Award nominated author of SLEEPER CELL.

He speaks Spanish and French and grew up in a religious community in the desert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Engrossing January 30, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a can't put down, must keep reading suspense novel.

A man in law school, a social worker, a home for people with no hope of being rehabilitated, a family torn apart by money and a devious doctor with hopes of regaining his past glory, give the author a great palette upon which to paint an awesome page turner.

Wes Pilson has a twin brother, Eric, who is retarded due to lack of oxygen at birth. Eric had some bruises and Wes, a law student specializing in medical law, signs on to work at the Riverwood Institution to check on the conditions there. Wes is confronted by two workers concerned over the disappearance of one of their friends and enlist Wes to help them find out what happened. Wes enlists the help of Becca, a hospital administrator/social worker. Soon they are embroiled in a life or death match that begins to uncover family secrets long buried but never forgotten and takes them to Costa Rica and back.

This is a well written book with marvelous characters - some good/some really bad - and they tell a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat with each additional page. This is one of those rare books where you want to tell the world you can't do anything until you finish it.

If you enjoy a pure adventure, I highly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just OK February 17, 2011

From what I can see, my review will put me in a minority of one; but I did read the book and this is my opinion.

This book gets off to a great start, hooked me from the first few pages. I thought it was a good read up to about the halfway point, when the violence starts getting more grizzly, often gratuitous.

It's not what I would consider a thriller -- my idea of a thriller is a story that holds you spellbound and makes it hard to put the book down, which is not the case here -- and I was disappointed to figure out so early in the story the mystery which isn't revealed until almost the end. The story also becomes more far-fetched and unbelievable as you get deeper into it. In places it seems disjointed, not credible in terms of how the characters are connected.

If you like a book that's part mystery, part ordinary story-telling, and a lot of blood & guts, this one may be for you. It's just not my cup of tea.

I do, however, have another highly rated book by this author which I intend to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Had potential, but ultimately unsatisfying February 22, 2011

The first third of this book worked fairly well. The premise behind the novel instantly captured my attention: a paralyzed patient (Chad Lett), locked within his own mind with no way to communicate that he is not actually a vegetable. The mystery aspect of the novel was intriguing as well. When he finally finds someone who understands that his blinking patterns register conscious thought, this woman (Rosa) vanishes under suspicious circumstances.

A law school student, Wes Pilson, decides to take a semester to work at the facility to keep an eye on his little brother, who is a patient at the facility. Wes is assigned to Chad's room, and he eventually begins investigating some of the unexplained happenings at the facility.

The set-up of the plot line was fine. It pulled me in and held my attention. However, things started to devolve once the reader starts to uncover the why, how, and who. There were a couple of scenes that just were not believable. I understand readers are expected to buy some plot contrivances for the sake of good fiction- but this was stretching the suspension of disbelief just a bit far for my taste.

The other thing that bothered me about the novel was the profanity. I know not everyone has a problem with profanity, but for those like myself that do, I usually include this in my reviews so others can know what to expect. This novel used just about every curse word, including several uses of the "f" word (once inserted in between Jesus and Christ). As a Christian, this kind of misuse of Jesus' name is very offensive to me- as is the misuse of God's name (g.d. which popped up numerous times). I expect to find some profanity in most mainstream novels, but this one had too much for me.

As far as violence goes, several people are murdered and attacked, but I can't say there was a huge gore factor to any of it. Sexual situations- there are a couple of scenes where the antagonist has sex with a young immigrant girl. I suppose the detail in these scenes was added to underscore the sordid character of the antagonist. However, it just felt voyeuristic to me.

I wanted to like this book, but it just didn't work for me. Despite the problems I had with the plot line of this book, I think this author is a talented writer and has imagination. I would give his books another try if not for all the objectionable content.

Interesting New Thriller/Mystery/... about Diving
I'm enjoying the book so far (about 40% through) but I've noticed occasional formatting issues - specifically, several paragraphs at a time being indented farther than the other paragraphs (not just the first line - the whole paragraphs are farther in). It's not a big deal, just thought I'd... Read more
