This novella is my favorite of Bryan Smith's. It has a great storyline with many twists. It has characters you feel for and who act in a consistent manner...no leaps of faith for the reader to try and understand what happened...some serious gore and sex...and, most importantly to me, a real growth in his writing that will stun the loyal readership as well as garner new ones. Another winner for Bryan Smith.

The book kicks off with Mike Bradley unexpectedly finding himself attending a satanic cult meeting. He’s doing it for a girl, Marnie. Unfortunately, it turns out that these particular satanists are not role playing goths, but actual, legitimate, murderous satanists. They are eager to recruit their all important 13th member, Mike, to their group, The Diabolical Conspiracy. The problem is that once they ask you to join, the only other option is death.

Seemingly stuck in the group and forced to carry out horrific acts, Mike’s displeasure is balanced with Marnie, orgies, and drugs. He bides his time looking for a way out, but with threats against himself and his family, it’s no easy feat. After playing along for months, he is asked to do something that he truly can’t do, and it makes him snap. He decides that he must seek to end the cult once and for all.

I liked the suburban setting, where it could just as easily have been a PTA meeting instead of a satanic cult. All the members of The Diabolical Conspiracy have normal lives and day jobs when they are not together being satanists. It made me think back to the headlines during the 1980s about the satanic panic that swept the nation. The media and evangelists were convinced of a deep, insidious network of satanists controlling society and institutions. They even went so far as claiming to hear hidden messages in Black Sabbath records played backwards. Those were the days.

The two main antagonists, Nadia and Marnie, were very interesting characters. Nadia was especially fascinating as the seductive and dominant leader of the cult, oozing control and charisma, with a ruthless viciousness underneath her beautiful exterior. The rest of the circle were so-so and didn’t get too much character development.

I've never read Bryan Smith before, but I've read a lot of authors who seem to like him. So, when I saw this story pop up on my kindle I bought it. Good writing and I loved the story. I'll admit it's a whole lot scarier thinking that there may actually be more organised, middle to upper class Satanists than just your average drunk, drugged out satanist. Not that I've met any, but I've met a few Mormons and that's about as close as I want to get!! Yep, I'd recommend this story and author, and I plan to read more from this author.

Bryan Smith has quickly become my favorite working author topping others on my list such as Ketchum, Little and Lee. This novella is another prime example of why that is. The Diabolical Conspiracy is a thrilling page turner as expected.

As a long time fan of Bryan Smith, I was delighted to download my first ebook. The story is simple yet terrifying in the idea that this could happen anywhere, maybe even right down your own street. The characters were anything like what one would expect to be worshiping the Devil...average every day people, maybe like your neighbor who faithfully tends to his yard every Saturday. Throw in an ordinary protagonist and you have a conspiracy worth reading. Truly Diabolical indeed...a fun afternoon's read and a great distraction to the snow outside
