Book Description

Imagine infants free from painful diaper rash, new parenthood without thousands of dollars wasted in diapering costs, toilet training that is natural and noncoercive, and, most important, happier babies and parents

As Christine Gross-Loh reveals in her progressive, enlightening book, all this is possible and more. Infants are born with the ability to communicate their need to "go," just as they communicate hunger or sleepiness. Gross-Loh, a mother of two children who were diaper-free at eighteen and fifteen months, uses the tenets of "elimination communication," or EC, to teach parents how to identify and respond to their baby or toddler's natural cues.

Unlike the all-or-nothing approach of some parenting books, The Diaper-Free Baby addresses three categories of parents: full-time, part-time, and occasional EC'ers. Parents can practice EC as much or as little as fits their family and lifestyle. A support group within a book, The Diaper-Free Baby also includes inspiring testimonials throughout every chapter. Parents who have successfully practiced EC identify common struggles, share experiences and problem-solving tips, and provide encouragement for those new to the technique. Their motivational stories together with Gross-Loh's practical advice will appeal to all parents interested in a fresh alternative to traditional toilet training.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful Information November 2, 2012

I bought this book because I am interested in elimination communication for baby #2. In reading this book it also helped to toilet train baby #1. It gave me the patience and understanding I needed to go diaper free. The book is very organized in how it breaks down the diaper free guidelines by ages and experience and suggests a ton of diaper free items I wasn't familiar with. The book gave me the confidence to go diaper free with baby #1 as soon as I was done reading it and I have to confidence to start when baby #2 comes.

Very easy to read and not at all judgemental or preachy. Gives ANYONE some great things to think about in terms of communicating with your baby.

I really enjoyed this book. I have never heard of EC'ing before and this book explains it very nicely and it is easy to understand. I started EC'ing my 6 week-old son and it is going pretty good so far

3.0 out of 5 stars I could have done without all of the commentary March 10, 2013

When considering elimination communication, I wanted a how-to guide, and that's really all I wanted. I was a little frustrated that this book was so full of parental comments and concerns, especially since I could have found that in seconds online. Rather, I was hoping I could find an easy to understand explanation on how to make elimination communication work for our daughter. I was a little disappointed that I had to sift so much to find the important content. *I read it on a kindle, so this may not have been such a problem with a paperback.*

a great resource that allowed a low key relaxed approach. We chose the part-time EC approach and though we aren't about to be potty-trained, since about 10 months we've had almost no poopy diapers. Yay!

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible approach April 16, 2012

Great introduction to elimination communication which lays out very clealy not only the what & why but provides 3 approaches - full time, part time & occasional - to starting EC. It all makes such sense that I gave it a go with my 6 month old as soon as I could get my hands on a potty. First time on & we had a tinkle! Since then we have been catching all poos & between 1 & 3 wee's a day & that's without spending any time diaper free. I wish I'd read the book before my daughter was born & started much earlier. It's so easy & we've taken our potty on 2 recent international trips & my daughter I think much prefers to use it than go in her diaper.
