Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The "I" Diet is a breakthrough: A diet based on impeccable research. A diet where the dieter never goes hungry or feels deprived. A diet that's completely healthy for you, grounded in the metabolic, genetic and psychological workings of the human body. A diet that shows how the hardwired food instincts that once ensured our survival are now driving too many on the road to obesity—and how we can turn those same instincts into an engine for permanent, healthy weight loss. And a fat-burning marvel of a diet that helped the men and women pictured on the cover and inside the book lose 30 pounds on average in a few short months. Start the "I" Diet and be amazed.

My husband and I are almost done with Stage One of this diet and so far are very impressed. We haven't felt hungry (except when we skipped snacks) and it's been incredibly easy to stick to. The food is incredible, it tastes so good that it's hard to believe that this is a diet. Both of us have also lost weight which is, of course, the goal.

To those who complain about the cooking, we found that there is cooking to be done, but it's so easy and quick it isn't a chore. For us it helped break us out of the delivery rut and gave us a way to always know what was for dinner--a huge help in our indecisive house. It also reinforced what a healthy portion size is for adults which is something we needed to learn.

To those who are concerned with the lack of exercise, this isn't an exercise book. Exercise is a healthy part of living, but studies have shown that it doesn't really help with weight loss. It's almost impossible to work out enough to burn the calories you're taking in if you aren't paying attention to that. I'm doing this along with Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shredand I'm having great success, my husband is just dieting and he's having equal success.

My one quibble with the book is that it needs editing. The page numbers to the recipes in the menu plans do not always line up with the recipe in the back of the book. It's not hard to find what you're looking for since you're usually in the correct section but it's really annoying, especially when some dishes have very similar names and can be easily confused. I'm using the paperback version, so I don't know if this also applies to the hardcover version.

If you're thinking of trying this diet, you should try it.

I rarely rate books, but this one is worth it. It's just as advertised: a slow-but-steady, no-nonsense way to accomplish one's weight loss goals. To me, there are two great benefits:

1. It makes sense. Once you read the opening chapters, you're almost certain to have an "aha!" moment where you realize just why weight/fat loss is such a struggle. At that point, it becomes obvious why the stage I/II/III food plans are structured the way they are.

2. It's flexible. All diet plans allow for substitutions as appropriate. There's a vegetarian option, there's an option for those of different weights who need different amounts of calories, there are periodic checkups so you can easily tell if you're on track or not (and how to adjust if appropriate), and so on. Very thorough.

The only drawback would be that the initial meal planning takes some work. I freely admit that if it weren't for my wonderful, food-minded wife, I would probably not have made it through stage I. However, once she initially determined all our needs, groceries, and meal plans for the first several days, it became simple, straightforward, and satisfying.

Most importantly, we've both seen results just one week into it and have felt good and satisfied almost the entire time. Looking forward to additional progress!

I hate dieting and have never been able to stick to a diet for more than a few days. I always get overwhelmed and frustrated, giving up and swearing I'll never do it again. Also, I'm starving! Not so with this diet. This is the only diet I've ever been successful with, it feels like a small miracle. The two weeks before I even started the diet, i lost 5 lbs.! This diet is simple, and it IS intuitive, it makes sense. I highly recommend The "I" Diet, and have actually given it to friends and family as a gift. Anyone can do this diet AND continue on with it, keeping the weight off with the great recipes. It really does teach a new way to eat and think about food. I very rarely write reviews, but am inspired by the results I've had, so much so I needed to say something. I think EVERYONE can benefit from this book!

As with many dieters I have tried a thousand different diets. The difference with this one is that it is based on the science of eating, and why we eat. It tells why our evolution has created instincts of when and what to eat. Then it tells how to work with these instincts to eat in a more appropriate way for today's world. I have been on this diet for about 6 weeks and have lost about 12 pounds. No - this isn't a crash diet that will get you ready for a swimsuit in a month, it is a sensible and realistic way to live. I firmly believe I will lose all the weight I need to - slowly and surely, which is the best way to keep it off in the long run.

With my 35 pounds of excess fat (and my husband's 80 extra) that have stubbornly refused to disappear despite LOTS of exercise and good eating, I must admit, as a non-dieter, I was skeptical about this "diet" at first. After reading many of Dr.Susan Roberts' papers and browsing through the book, however, I was pretty impressed at the science, logic, and recipes behind this eating plan and decided we'd give it a try.

After a week, I can say several things about the "I"Diet:

--If you like to eat lots of delicious, fresh, healthy food, this plan fits the bill. It uses principles of volumetrics (fiber, liquids, etc.) to fill you up and help you stay full. No hunger AT ALL. If you are not used to eating a lot of fiber, though, you need to follow the instructions for gradually building up to the 50+ grams a day. Drinking a lot of water is also essential with this amount of dietary fiber.

--If you like variety in your meals and snacks, there is plenty of choice here, if you want it, whether you are herbivore or carnivore, basic or advanced cook.

--If you want to automate your meals, this system makes it easy. I just copied the three meal plan pages for stage I, then cooked enough of each days' entrees to feed us for two days. The first day we cook, the next, we just heat and eat, and so on.

--If you want to introduce a little food-confusion to your normal dietary habits, this plan does it. Some days are high-carb/high-fiber, while others have more protein, which keeps your body guessing about what's coming next and what to hold onto.

--The nutritional values of the foods here are excellent. We are using BodyMedia Fit
