Biography

A long time ago, someone said, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Chances are that dude is dead (actually, it was Nietzche and he’s been dead for years), but those seven little words have not only become a modern philosophical and medical catchphrase, but a signpost to life for The Dillinger Escape Plan. That’s because despite a multitude of major ... Read more in Amazon's The Dillinger Escape Plan Store

The sad thing about the guy who wrote the one-star review were his reasons for disliking it (well that and that fact that he had to resort to mixed imagery and terribly cliche metaphors and similies). I freely admit that this music by DEP will not be everyone's type. I dislike most Country music I've heard, but I'm intelligent enough to understand that there are still talented musicians in that scene of music. The same is true here.
Anyone with any musical background (which I have, majored in Music Theory in college, play guitar and piano) can immediately understand the intense complexity and incredible musicianship. A lot of people don't like Arnold Schoenburg either (he was a modern classical composer who pioneered 12-tone form of composition, i.e. mathmatically formulated musical passages). But he was a genius, and many people were moved by that genius.
The claim that this band has not talent is easily refutable by anyone with any background in music. The rythmic transitions, the polyrythms, the twelve tone rows, the syncopation, and the guitar passages that are based on mathmatical sequences are all easy evidence of a real level of pure skill.
The problem is, too many ignorant people assume that if *they* don't like a type of music, it must be stupid, lame, terrible, whatever.
My analysis of the band? These guys are incredibly talented. Some people may not like their "noise" style. I respect that, however I do love the style of their music. For me, personally: five stars.

This re-release is just as great as the original, except it had 3 added bonuses to it. After the end of the amazing debut EP from New Jersey's finest there are three live tracks from later material. If you've ever listened to DEP before (and enjoyed their music) you know just how great this CD will be and is. If you haven't had the pleasure of listening to DEP before, whenever you get the chance to. Do it! You will find one of the most talented bands EVER playing some of the most hardest, heaviest, and technically chaotic music ever. This hardcore/metalcore jazz fusion band has it all. This is a great buy for metal and hardcore fans alike.

the people who ve said that DEP "are not technical" "sound like crapcore" etc. are obviously dont understand the complex time signatures and shifts that DEP use in their composiitons! DEP are by far one of the most technical bands out there right now!

and defninitely one of the best (if not THE best) hardcore/metalcore bands ever!

it is obvious that nikkie, nico, and the anonymous music fan who claims that DEP "sux" arent musicians themselves (or atleast not GOOD ones)!

and the thing that is MOST obvious is the fact that they have the collective IQ of a fossilized turd!

tho not DEP's best (best=clac. infinity) this cd is definitely one of the best hardcore releases and definitely desereves 5 stars! new DEP listeners should buy this album second after buying calulating infinity!

First of all, responding to the kids who reviewed this release and gave it one or two stars (this is not a flame post):
This is an EP not an LP (I hope you guys know the differences here). This release shows the obvious band's quality trying to discover their own style and succeeding on doing it. Don't expect something like Calculating Infinity which is their first album. Music here is crude and sound quality is not so good if you look at it as demo. How many bands you know can put up a demo like this one? For the reasons I mentioned, giving it one star is just plain stupid. It's just hating the band because people is saying how amazing it is. Listen to Metallica instead.
To the rest of the people: I can't say much about the sound. There are no words enough to describe the joy of listening to DEP. There is a balance between precise and brutal. The vocals are insane and show the animal part of the band. The rest of the band shows the exact opposite: a well-structured noise with mathematical precision. This balance adds a lot to their music and you'll feel like you have never heard anything like it. It's really difficult to understand some parts of the songs due to the complexity and the speed and all of the songs require repeated plays except for "Proceed With Caution" which is more like an introduction. Dillinger Escape Plan is definitelly not easy listenable at first. It's like jazz: once you get used to it you can even sing along.
But a friendly warning: DEP is not for everyone. Try listening to this site's samples before thinking about purchasing this EP. A must have for fans of non-commercial hardcore/metal bands! And for those who seek bands with talented drummers. Over the top!

after hearing the the very first song they became my all time favorite band. Its not just a couple of angry guys who decided to slap a band together, these of four of the most talented musicians i've ever heard. Every song on this cd is pure genius. the cd being only around 18 minutes or something like that, it never gets boring, every time you listen to it, you will appritiate it more and more. Not just for the screaming, but for the insane and eerie guitar riffs. And their newer stuff only gets better and better. I would travel all the way to new jersey just to see them play a show. These guys will lead noise core into a new era.
