Editorial Reviews

How do you select, organize and direct a play successfully? Dale McFadden, a winner of Chicago's "Jefferson Award," and presently an Assistant Professor at Indiana University, answers that question and many others by addressing the entire process of directing a theatrical production:

-History of directing
-Working with designers
-How to select a play
-Principles of staging
-Text analysis
-Blocking & Picturization
-Successful Collaboration
-Rehearsing the play

This program is not only helpful to theatre students, but can also be a tremendous asset to first time and seasoned directors! Teacher's guide and selective bibliography included.

The video is fairly dry; bear in mind these are theatre students hosting a video, and the subtlety of screen isn't as used as it might have been. In other words, the acting segments might seem weak, but it's only because they are stage-acting for film, and the translation never works. The techniques are tried-and-true, practical, and easy to follow. Any theatre student would benefit from it,as would the myriad teachers and churchgoers who find themselves "volunteered" to produce a show of some sort. As a theatre owner of 5 years, I can honestly say this video covers all the basics quite well, giving viewers enough info to really get started on their show.
