Book Description

January 17, 2012
Winner of the 2012 IPPY Bronze Medal for Romance
#6 on Amazon Bestseller List
There's nothing like receiving a letter from a teenage son you knew nothing about, but that's what happens to international rock star, Jonathon Stone. He drops everything to find the boy, and his mother--Naomi, the girl he loved so many years ago who left him when his rock n roll life became too much for her to bear.

Seeing her is like falling in love all over again, and everything seems perfect, until someone sets out to destroy their idyllic life.

BACK COVER EXCERPT
It felt as if the universe itself had opened to welcome us into its embrace . . . It still feels that way to me, Naomi, every time we are together. It feels that way when you walk into a room and I see you. Now that I have you back, I feel the unbearable emptiness of those years without you. I was selfish, distracted, and uncaring. You should never have had to endure what you did, and I should have fought a lot harder to find you again . . .

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The story of star-crossed love may be as old as the hills, but dress it up in the glamour of today's rock 'n roll superstardom and it remains a compelling one. Add in a few well-kept secrets, obsessive exes, and the dark, dangerous side of fame, and The Distant Shore becomes a page-turner." ~Gwen McCauley, author of The Alchemy of Energy

"Kobras has crafted a charming and believable romance set against well-crafted backdrops that draw the reader in." ~Margot Kinberg, author of Publish or Perish

"Kobras delivers a story of love that transcends time and crosses continents. Poignant and beautiful . . . Fans will appreciate her fresh voice." --~Donna Carrick, author of The First Excellence

About the Author

Award-winning author Mariam Kobras was born in Frankfurt, Germany. Growing up, she lived with her family in Brazil and Saudi Arabia before they decided to settle in Germany. She attended school there and studied American literature and psychology at Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen. Today she writes and lives in Hamburg, Germany, with her husband, two sons, and two cats.

The storyline for The Distant Shore was inspired by her fascination with the limitations fame can impose on people. Her book explores the value of love in a world where money and a front-page photo are sometimes more important than a person's soul.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Start of a great trilogy December 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I normally don't like rock star romances although I do like secret baby plotline. Well this secret baby is 16 years old when he (not the heroine contacts the hero). The rock star, Jon Stone, is a very good hero. He is caring for the heroine, but not a pushover. He has his own demons to fight and overcome but they do not take up the entire story.

The heroine, Naomi, is not too stupid or too naive to live, as many rock star romance heroines end up. She has her own issues - her family being one. However this is a family that loves her. I won't do spoilers but the conflict between Jon and Naomi's family (while not the major conflict of the book) is well drawn and believable.

Speaking of secondary characters, beside Naomi's family, they are all well fleshed out. Sal, Jon's manager, is not only caring for Jon's ability to make money (another rock star romance cliché). Joshua (the secret baby) is also well drawn - although sometime way too mature for a 16 year old.

Since this is the beginning of a trilogy there is no happy ever after or even happy for now at the end of this book. I enjoyed A Distant Shore so much I have already bought the second in the Stone Trilogy - Under the Same Sun. I am looking forward eagerly to the third book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Authentic Voice February 4, 2013
Format:Paperback
I truly enjoyed everything about this strong and well-written novel. One of my favorite things was that despite the many interruptions I had while reading, the plot line and characterizations were so compelling that I never forgot where I was each time I picked up the book. In fact, everything is so real here that I now feel as if I know these people and could sit down and have a conversation with them.

Mariam Kobras has a real gift for description, and I loved the settings in particular; some of the passages read like poetry. Reading her book was the equivalent of taking a vacation--and to my mind that's the best kind of reading experience there is.

I have already purchased the next in the series and look forward to Book #3. Jon, Naomi, and the deep bond that ties them together are now a permanent part of my literary vocabulary--so glad I found these books!
