This book is a useful and straightforward guide to the divorce process. I found the step-by-step guides for dealing with finances, legal issues, and child custody (chapters one – four and chapter six) accessible and useful. I also thought the glossary and the appendix of divorce-related resources were very helpful.
As some have already pointed out, the book tends to repeat information. I also felt that chapters five, seven, eight and nine (the chapters dealing with emotional issues related to divorce) were perfunctory at best and largely unhelpful. Readers looking for information on this kind of subject matter should look elsewhere.
The information is well organized and laid out in step-by-step chapters. The detailed glossary and reference pages at the back are very helpful if you need to gain additional information on a particular aspect of your divorce. Everyone's situation is going to be different but this excellent resource keeps you on top of exactly what areas you need to consider when navigating divorce.
Disclosure: I received this book free for the purpose of review.
Step-by-step, you learn 1)the legal grounds for a divorce, 2) alternatives to divorce (i.e. legal separation, annulment, etc), 3) types of divorce (at-fault, uncontested). It even has a quiz to help you decide whether you should get an attorney, which is very helpful when you are unfamiliar with all the different decision-making components that go into filing for a divorce. The first part of the book, dealing with legal issues and finances, I found to be most practical, for the average person who just don't know the ins and outs of the legal system. The second half does deal with children/custody (also very useful) but also emotions, etc. For people looking for guidance in those areas, this may not be the place to get it--therapy or a book more specific to grieving and/or experiences with divorce would probably be more therapeutic and rich. Overall, the strength of this book was in teaching the things to watch out for when you are going through a divorce.
Disclaimer: I received this book free for the purpose of review.
Important resource information is included throughout the book as well as an additional list of resources and references for material included at the back.
This book is a must-have for anyone who is considering, just starting, or in the middle of a divorce. It makes an unpleasant experience bearable as it guides you through each step.
