Editorial Reviews

Review

"Kathy's writing is filled with energy and promise and it feels as if at every other paragraph there's an "I've been there." Even though none of us would take a "vacation from our life" like Janie does, we can't put the story down because the thread continues to bring with it more and more we love to read."
Dennis Foley, Author of "A Requiem for Crows"

"If you enjoy books with plenty of humor, and you can relate to how a harried woman might overreact if she ran out of her favorite bubble bath, then you'll definitely enjoy The Do-Over."

Sandra Nachlinger, "Boomers and Books" Blog

"I gave The Do Over a very rare-for-me five stars. It is one of the very few books that I've read from new authors that I am fairly sure I will re-read someday. And I know I'll enjoy it then as much as I did the first time."
Bobbye Land Hudspeth, "I Read That Book Too" Blog

"Just before her fortieth birthday, Mara Jane Mulligan, devoted wife and mother, runs out of bubble bath, and the ensuing panic attack drives her to Canada for more. She realizes that one foamy soak probably won't cure what ails her, so she takes a 30 day vacation from her life. (What woman doesn't need one of those?!)

As her 30 days sail by, Mara knows she has a decision to make that even Dorothy couldn't avoid... Will she click her heels for home or kick them up for good?"

Hollywood Beginnings - Now available as an audio book... read by the author!
"My mom starred in the most popular beach party movie ever made. Sounds great, right?"

But for Amy there was something not great about her mother's decision to flee Hollywood for Minnesota and never look back. Now, forty years later, mother and daughter return to the City of Angels where surprise endings and happy beginnings are born.

Plan On It
***A Zola Award winning novel - Pacific Writer's Association***

This novel invites all of us to take a chance, to make a leap of faith, and to try a new approach in our otherwise mundane lives. In The Do-Over, Ms. Dunnehoff rings a bell that incites a perfectly normal wife and mother to flee her suburban life for unknown parts in another country, all because an empty bottle of soap sabotages her bubble bath. We've all been there, at that 'final straw', the one tiny situation that snowballs into a tornado. Think Steve Martin in Father of the Bride when he only wants 8 hot dog buns instead of 10. Protagonist Janie Mulligan flees in the middle of the night to purchase more soap in a strange place where she knows not a soul. Yet there amidst the chaos of a small town, she finds something that's been eluding her for years: her purpose. Meanwhile, Janie's befuddled but tenacious spouse shows more patience than most when he follows her, along with his mother, to convince her their life is just fine the way it is. Like a typical guy who hates change, he just doesn't get it until ... well, that's the fun part! The writing is witty, the plot clever, the theme universal, and the feeling at the end, happy but realistic. I can't wait for this author's next book!

every woman wants to escape herself, be someone totally unlike her normal self, just for a little while.
mara jane mulligan has always been the good child, the faithful wife, the good (if slightly boring) mom... and one day she decides to get away from it all.
i found the book very sweet but powerful as it tells of a woman discovering her true self. it made me smile and giggle and also envy her alittle and wish that i had the courage to do what she did.

as i live in seattle and have been to gastown, vancouver, i found myself liking the author's thorough descriptions of gastown. :) they made me want to go there again.

this book is wonderful and i loved it... 5 heartfelt stars for this book, deservedly given.

I purchased this book because it sounded interesting and got great reviews. I was very excited to start it; however, once I started reading that excitement quickly faded. This book is awful and drags on and on. The number of pages devoted to bubble bath is ridiculous. I tried to stick with it and hoped that it would get better. Unfortunately, it was very slow and got annoying. I usually like these fun, silly reads, but I finally had to give myself permission to stop reading it (I usually finish everything I read).

The only reason I was able to bring myself to finish this book was the hope that at some point it would get good. This book "Flip Flops" more than a fish on the shore. For a "simple" read this was one of the most confusing story lines I have ever tried to follow. The writer goes every which way but to the point. I found Very little romance and almost No comedy at all in the book.....

The ending,if you can call it that, was like a jukebox that ran out of money. It just stops. Way to many unanswered questions. If you want to read a book that is sure to dissapoint than this is the book for you.....

The only reason I gave it one star is because there was no option for a half star........

Who doesn't think about a vacation from their life? We all do, so the idea of this book intrigued me. The main character, however, was not someone I could like or relate to. I had a very very hard time even finishing this book - it was boring and not at all funny or romantic. The ending was also unsatisfying. Find a good writer to read a good escape book - this isn't it.

I thought the book description sounded fun and there were plenty of good reviews, but I was disappointed. It was not very well written, and it seemed shallow and immature. There were a lot of grammatical errors and bad transitions.
