Book Description

The Doctor's Diet is the cure to unhealthy eating — an American epidemic with a death toll higher than that of car accidents, drug abuse, smoking, and gun violence combined. Dr. Stork is genuinely concerned about what he considers to be a true crisis.  He has created a flexible and workable diet plan that will help readers lose weight, restore health, prevent disease and ultimately add years to their lives. In the book, Dr. Stork explains all of the potentially fatal health risks associated with an unhealthy diet and the specific food groups that can act as medicines to attain immediate results. Flexibility is built into the recipes in order to accommodate all different diets and skill levels, from meat lovers to vegetarians and chefs to non-cooks. In The Doctor's Diet, Dr. Stork outlines the steps to a healthier life with encouragement, personal anecdotes, and a passionate sense of urgency to rescue the reader from diet-related demise.

About the Author

Dr. Travis Stork is an Emmy®-nominated co-host of the award-winning talk show “The Doctors” and a practicing board-certified emergency medicine physician. He graduated magna cum laude from Duke University and earned his M.D. with honors from the University of Virginia, where he was elected into the prestigious honor society of Alpha Omega Alpha for outstanding academic achievement.

Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr. Stork is a fervent believer in helping patients feel empowered when it comes to their health. Dr. Stork practices what he preaches and likes to teach by example, biking to work every day, rain or shine. While he doesn’t expect individuals to give up their cars, he is passionate about enlightening individuals on simple ways to attain and maintain good health based on their own life and circumstances. He believes that oftentimes, when people come to the E.R., it’s already too late. That’s why he takes such pride in teaching people how to avoid preventable illness before it happens. Most people don’t realize that they make over 200 health-related decisions every day that dictate how well and how long they live. Dr. Stork believes health is not about the gym or a deprivation diet; health is achieved by focusing on those seemingly inconsequential 200-plus decisions people make throughout the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars It this simple: it works. March 29, 2014
Format:Hardcover
After seeing this on The Doctor's TV show, I did some research and read the reviews of the book on here. Most of it was good, and I was encouraged by the idea that it didn't just TELL me what to eat but told me WHY I was eating it.

For two weeks prior to receiving this book, I tried to do my own diet plan where I cut down my calories and did an hour exercise at least five days a week. I found myself tired and hungry and I couldn't understand why. So, I bought this book and two days after reading it, I started on the STAT plan.

The first and foremost thing I found was that I wasn't hungry at all. Sometimes I even had to force myself to eat some more because I just didn't feel empty. I amped up my exercise so that I did a minimum hour exercise for six days every week and kept strictly to the STAT plan. Which was EASY. Anyone who thinks it's too hard maybe just needs to have a bit more confidence and determination that the results will come eventually.

Now, on my seventh week on this diet, I have lost a current total of 7kg and an (as yet) unmeasured number of inches around my waist. As a girl of 21 who has Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, the weight around my waist was something that my Obstetrician/Gynaecologist told me would exacerbate my symptoms. Before this diet, I had severe trouble sleeping through the night, concentrating and had a general moody disposition. Now, I have my exercise in the morning and am smiling by the time I start my long days at university.
There was a period of time where I plateaued in my weight loss, but I continued losing inches off my waist. So don't feel disappointed or unmotivated if/when this happens. Just because you're not losing weight doesn't mean that it's not working for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a fad diet, not your typical diet book January 10, 2014
By DJ AZ
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a great, somewhat non-traditional "diet book". Dr. Stork writes in an easy to read, conversational style. The book is full of reasons to eat healthy and what to expect as consequences when we don't. Dr. Stork provides lots of scientific study evidence, without getting bogged down in the details of each study.

This book does not contain ANY before & after photos and he doesn't guaranty some ridiculous weight loss miracle. Dr. Stork emphasizes how we are killing ourselves and making our heart and other organs work way too hard, when we have visceral fat around our waists. I've just started day 4 of the STAT diet and I'm down 2 pounds.

This diet is basically a high protein, high veggie, low fruit, very low whole grain, very low fat, no added sugar diet. You alternate between a 2 week STAT plan which is the most restrictive and a 2 week RESTORE plan that allows for more food and 2 alcoholic drinks a week. After 2 weeks on the Restore plan, you go back to 2 weeks of the STAT menu, and you keep switching every 2 weeks until you reach your goal weight and move on to the MAINTAIN plan. You do count serving sizes, most things are 1/2 a cup or a cup, or 3-4 oz. for proteins, but you never count actual calories. He also talks about eating mindfully and that our taste buds will change once we eliminate sugar and artificial sweeteners. In just 4 days, I've noticed that food is starting to taste better and is more satisfying than it has been in a while.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Difficult and Pricey to keep up with January 11, 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Unless you have your own hired chef, this diet book was not made easy for the everyday person. It also too expensive with the multitude of ingredients to keep up with for the normal paycheck.

Day 1 ingredients took up an entire lined piece of paper.

There needs to be a grocery list already created and the first week needs to repeat ingredients, even if the recipes vary, so your half used items don't go bad otherwise you'll break the bank buying everything.

Someone needs a reality check on what the majority of America's households can afford and what a typical dieter is willing to do to begin a diet. If you overwhelm us, we feel defeated before we even begin. I know I did.

I can't believe reading all of these reviews that are bad from people who haven't even tried this diet! Even better are the ones who haven't even read or purchased the book! I started the drs diet on January 2nd and it is now January 23 and I am 17 pounds down.
Anything that you do in your life that changes your comfort is going to be hard at first. I have to wonder how many of you have stuck this out for longer than a few days before you decided that it was just too hard and this book was a waste of time. Then you tell anyone who would listen your string of excuses on why this book doesn't work. I know. I've been there. But this one does work and we are affording it just fine. The big difference is that we make more trips to the grocery because we are eating mostly fresh and you just can't stock up on fresh.
When you quit buying the other crap that has made us fat and start only buying for this diet, there really isn't a
difference price wise. I've been able to put this into my children's diets as well and they are doing well for it.
Basically, if you aren't willing to change your life for good and accept the challenges and emotions that come with it, then don't bother until you are ready because this book will not change your life. Only you will change your life. But when you are ready, this book is a good place to start. And remember, this is a diet. You don't have to do the hard parts forever. There is a maintain plan at the end for when you do reach your goal weight. It's all about balance and moderation. Good luck! If you are wanting a change, I highs recommend this book.
