I feel strongly about this book and also feel that you need to know a bit about my story to appreciate why I strongly recommend it, so please bear with me! I started reading this book I was 2 weeks into bringing home 2 shelter dogs home, after losing a furkid I'd raised since 5wks after 15 1/2 years. I thought I knew alot about dogs, but I've found out I knew alot about MY dog and how generally to raise a semi-well adjusted and well behaved, although not well trained, dog that came from an almost ideal beginning :)

By the time I got a few doggie medical issues taken care of and felt was at the point where I knew what would need to be worked on a few more weeks have passed and I am at my wits end. You see, neither dog after leaving an unideal shelter situation (by this I mean a very poorly ran shelter compared to a good shelter environment, obviously none of them are an ideal situation for a dog) were exhibiting the same personalities I had experienced when meeting them.

During this time I kinda just looked up and read the chapters dealing with specific behavioral/training/etc issues that I was having and was disappointed in the book, which had been recommended by a behaviorist we hadn't yet seen. You see, I felt that the book was a contradictory mess of being too specific about scenarios while entirely vague at the same time. I was convinced that this book could not help me, because it did not align with my specific scenario and wasn't general enough in the advise for me to successfully implement some variety of the suggestions.

This book is a must read for anyone who trains, works with dogs, or just lives with a dog. John Rogerson understands dogs, and saying he is a great instructor, competitor, or dog trainer is an understatement.

Mr. Rogerson shares his philosophy of dogs and training in this book. It was not written to be a comprehensive training book. That being said he provides guidance and knowledge on everything from raising and training a puppy, how to chose a dog, and guidance on working with serious behavior problems.

After reading this book you will understand why John Rogerson is one of the most sought after speakers in the world today.

John Rogerson was reluctant to write another book, but we (and our dogs) are better off for this book now released in paperback. I bought as many as I could to give away to my friends and fellow dog enthusiasts. This book is not just full of essential knowledge which he brings to the table from his life-long experiences working with dogs, but he also shares his dry British wit. Since I had been to his seminars before, I could hear his accent break through the written word. Next to the importance of using human emotion to communicate with your dog, I believe the author values humor. I so appreciate this aspect of the book, since the consequence of not understanding your dog's code is so dire. We need to smile a little. Certainly we are all aware of the huge problem of dogs that are abandoned on the streets and in shelters because of behavior problems. I believe that the philosophy he shares can change this issue.
This is an interesting read for pet dog owner and trainer alike. His wife's illustrations of the emotional human faces are charming! The tone of the book is light, not academic. In fact he prides himself in using shorter words than most canine behaviorists! Most of us struggle with the plight of dogs left behind and at shelters and are sympathetic with the burden taken on by rescue groups. This little book needs to be on every rescue groups resource list. At the price Amazon is selling them, you could easily donate a copy to your favorite rescue group...Know a breeder? Give them a copy!
First though, buy your own copy and enjoy!

The author is a respected authority on positive dog training, and is based in England. His training methods focus on developing a strong attachment between dog and owner. Some of his methods are certainly "outside the box", and you will not find them anywhere else.

This is the best book in my collection.

Every dog lover, trainer, professional must read this book.
John Rogerson has a remarkable understanding on dog behavior and human approach towards addressing them, and this book gives a very good insight in simple words on how your dog is and how we need to bring changes in our self so that we can have an excellent bound with our dogs.

Doesn't matter if your dog has any problem or not, or if he is well trained or needs training, this book is an excellent knowledge base for us to learn the key aspects of our companion.
The illustrations in this books are very expressive and clear.

Learn the art of communication and resolve your difficulties, with simple logic, fun, ease and happiness.

John Rogerson is one of those brilliant talents in the world whose abilities tend to stun the average person. I've personally attended several of his workshops and have never met anyone with a more complete understanding or a more profound intuitive grasp of dogs. What is even more unusual is that, unlike many extraordinary talents, he is able to communicate effectively with others about what he is doing and why. If you are looking for a book that will solve all of your problems with your dog, this is not it. In fact, no such book has ever been written. Training dogs is not about techniques, it is about relationships, and relationships are complex creatures. On the other hand, I have never read a more complete and enlightening book on training the pet dog. Read this book and you will never think about your canine companion in the same way again.
