It's hard to review a book when the previous 9 reviewers have captured everything that needs to be said. But this is a story worth commenting on, even if it is a repeat. The story is told from the perspective of a mentally challenged young man putting together his dream life as a dog walker in a small town. The author does a wonderful job of portraying Benny's interactions with the people he crosses paths with, from his clients, to unlikely friends that ride the bus with him. Throughout the story you see Benny's simple common sense and heart at work, caring for people the way he does for his 4-legged friends, despite the fact that people, in his opinion, don't have the sense dogs do. This is not so much a rounded plot with beginning, middle and end, as it is a chapter in Benny's life as he figures out his place in it. As others have said, not a read for everyone, but a true reward for those who try it.

There is an enfolding quality to Alvarez's prose that is almost hypnotic. It gives Benny an authentic, pure voice that resonates long after reading. Interestingly, the procession of comfort food in this book is quite memorable: mac-and-cheese, spaghetti, burgers, scrambled eggs... generally in the context of sharing them with the dog. This is a world where animals come first and people a warm, dim second. I appreciate that balance, and this literary author.

A truely inspirational book that will touch your heart.

This is one of those tales that not every one will "get" but for thse who do, the journey will be breathtaking :) I was in awe at the masterful weaving of this tale and the way Alvarez was able to craft it in such a wonderful way. Animal lovers and dog lovers alike will surely enjoy this epic novel :)

For about 95% of the book I felt it was worthy of 4 stars. I enjoyed the story, and I happily kept reading it, but it didn't have that "wow" factor for me. But between the last 5% of the story, and reflecting upon the story overall, my 4 stars quickly changed to 5. It's a good story with lots of memorable characters. Benny, the lead character, is likable and I found it interesting to see how he interacted with the other characters and dogs. Although he is a high school dropout, in many ways he's better off than all the other characters. The story is simple and yet there's so much to it.

The tale of Benny, a mentally challenged high school drop out, is a poignant story of a young man trying to find happiness and make a life for himself despite his limitations. It depicts his love of animals, friendships, love interest, family and his fight to strive for happiness in his own right. The Author, Corwyn Alvarez, gives us a warm and inviting rendition of his main charachter, Benny, who despite testing at an IQ of only 70, shows a rare intelligence, wit and sensitivity. He is an individual we can all relate to. The book is humorous and real.

The Dog Walker is a heartwarming coming of age story, which introduces us to Benjamin "Benny" Mozer, a slow-witted, sarcastic and charming young man, who prefers the company of canines to people. Benny's life breaks from the ordinary when he decides to drop out of high school and pursues his dream of becoming a dog walker and in the process falls in love with a forlorn prostitute named Chloe.

While the Dog Walker explores some adult subjects, it does so through the eyes of Benny, who is incapable of seeing the world in anything but an innocent and sarcastic light. I found that this book was a very quick read and the main character to be highly endearing. Benny was the main driver in making me want to find out what happens. At points I felt the story did not reach the crescendo/plot climax that that I expected, but even with that it made for an entertaining read. While I can see how this book would not be for everyone, if you want a inspirational story about an outcast engaging with the adult world for the first time and coming of age, then I recommend this story.

This is a delightful, slightly "Forrest Gump-ish" story. Like Forrest Gump, Benny is considered a little slow but has wisdom of his own. Like Forrest Gump, Benny gets into some slightly unbelievable situations (though on a much less epic scale.) As a reader, I suspended some disbelief and enjoyed the story and the writing. This particular sentence has stayed with me for several weeks, and is a good example of the subtle humor: "Noodles did such a wonderful job of licking the plates that Benny didn't have to do the dishes that night." That's it. It was not followed by "But he washed them anyway." or any other thought related to dishes or dog germs.

While the story was sweet (if a bit cliched), and Benny's "voice" seemed consistent for the most part, the book could have used some serious editing. I was surprised to read that the author had won a writing award; as I was reading the book I thought it was one of those self-published things that had never been read by anyone but perhaps the author's friends. I think the author had a lovely story to tell. A coach and editor would have helped him tell it better.
