Editorial Reviews

Review

“Harper creates a fascinating world of devices, conspiracies, and personalities…Filled with danger and narrow escapes, Alice and Gavin fight to survive and to find love in this steampunk coming of age story. Harper’s world building is well developed and offers an interesting combination of science and steam.”—SF Revu

“You’ll have great fun exploring the Third Ward, and the author created such a rich and lavish world for his characters…Twists and turns abound, and the author managed to lob some shockers at me that I’ll admit I didn’t see coming…If you love your Victorian adventures filled with zombies, amazing automatons, steampunk flare, and an impeccable eye for detail, you’ll love the fascinating (and fantastical) Doomsday Vault.”—My Bookish Ways

The Doomsday Vault is a good way to start off a new series in a highly specialized genre. Its combination of science and fantasy and good versus evil work well…A clever and worthwhile take on the Steampunk universe.”—That’s What I’m Talking About

“A fun and thrilling fast-paced adventure full of engaging characters and plenty of surprises…I particularly enjoyed all the interesting and unexpected twists that kept popping up, just when I thought I had the story figured out...”—SFF Chat

“The great thing about having all these awesome characters, is that it’s all snuggled up against a really great plot, several intermingling subplots and pretty dang great steampunk worldbuilding. And excellent writing…[The Doomsday Vault is] fun, funny and a damn fine romp of a read. SO much goodness packed into this book! Highly recommended.”—Lurv a la Mode

More About the Author

Steven Harper Piziks was born in Saginaw, Michigan, but he moved around a lot and has lived in Wisconsin, Germany, and (briefly) Ukraine. Currently he lives with his sons in southeastern Michigan.

His novels include In the Company of Mind and Corporate Mentality, both science fiction published by Baen Books. Writing as Steven Harper, he has produced the Silent Empire series and has written books based on Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and The Ghost Whisperer. He recently finished the four-book series the Clockwork Empire steampunk for Roc Books and is now hard at work on other projects.

Booklist calls his novels "fast, furious, and absorbing," and "intelligent enterntainment." Strange Horizons says his work is filled with "fast-paced adventure filled with intrigue and populated with characters you care about," and The Romantic Times writes that "Harper . . . creates a compelling universe."

Mr. Piziks currently teaches high school English in southeast Michigan. His students think he's hysterical, which isn't the same as thinking he's hilarious. When not writing, he plays the folk harp, dabbles in oral storytelling, and spends more time on-line than is probably good for him. I was a fan of this series before this book, but this entry ratches it up a notch.
Christian Klaver
I'm actually really rather happy about this because these books serve as a nice refresher from the usual books I read, and it's always nice to take a little break.
A Book Obsession..
The combination of history and steampunk was great fun to read, and the book's climax stopped my heart.

Now that Gavin has become a clockworker, infected by the only strain of the plague that Alice cannot cure, his time is running out as he slips further and further down the rabbit hole of his destroyed mind. Their only shot lies in making it to China in hopes that their own form of the clockworkers, Dragon Men hold the cure. But more than just time and distance lies in their way as the emperor of China has shut their borders to keep Alice's cure from taking away their Dragon Men and the technology they create. In an attempt to get across the border, the get sucked into a power struggle that could hold the very fate of the world in its hands and Gavin and Alice are the key to it all.

Everything about this series, and this book specifically was a roller coaster ride. There is such a sense of urgency as Gavin and Alice seem to always be racing against the clock. This makes the action, and really everything about The Dragon Men seems so incredibly intense and kept me sucked right in. Every time I thought things couldn't get more intense they suddenly do, and I'm left staggering. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of character developments and emotions as well, making this a well rounded book. Although I will say that with the way things ended, I can't imagine where things will be headed, but I am sure they will be one heck of ride once we get there.

Just like the previous installment, The Dragon Men had a recap section at the beginning of the book Granted this is probably mostly intended for new readers to the series so they can jump in anywhere, but even having read the previous books, I love it being there. I realize some may find it unnecessary or repetitive, but I couldn't be more grateful for it.

Not quite all of the answers that I was hoping for, but a good tale with solid story telling and great characters. The male leads background story was okay, but not truly as believable as the rest of the story. I love the historical perspective and the physics and history put into the story. Very entertaining. I am finishing the Havoc Machine, which I also am greatly enjoying.

I was a fan of this series before this book, but this entry ratches it up a notch. The scenes in China with the sympathetic but entirely terrifying antagonist really hooked me, and made Gavin and Alice seem to be in for some serious trouble. This kept up through the whole book, which quickly became my favorite of the series. Now I can't wait for another one!
