Editorial Reviews

We'll travel back to the beginnings of the automotive adventure and see the cars that royalty raced. We'll meet the diehard loyalists who feel Britian's quirky MGs, Triumphs and Morgans are the epitome of what a true sports car should be. We'll discover the interesting story of one of the world's most famous marques, Jaguar and see how this feline's reputation for speed, style and luxury grew. The story of Ferdinand Porche and his radical rear-engine roadster will introduce us to the engineering precision of the German sports car. While the swagger, power and style of Enzo Ferrari's twelve cylinder racing dynamos will show us what Italian passion can produce. The first American sports cars appeared on the road before World War I but disappeared by the mid-1930s. Several tried to launch an American sports car but it wasn't until the Corvette rolled off Chevy's production lines that the U.S. could claim it had one again. In the 1970s, gas prices soared and emission controls choked horsepower. The sports car looked like a doomed anachronism. But a quirky little import from Japan, the Miata, showed that all was not lost. It was fun, inexpensive, got surprisingly good gas mileage and everyone agreed, it was a sports car. BMW, Porsche, Chrysler, Mercedes, Jaguar all raced into production with new roadsters designed to catch the fancy of the boomers who were flush with their growing 401K earnings. This second coming of the sports car has created a new generation of enthusiasts who will probably take up the argument about what truly constitutes a sports car. We'll take some of these fabulous machines out for a drive while they bicker.
