4.0 out of 5 stars The Dream Slayer May 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I have been privileged to read the entire series by Jill Cooper. The Dream Slayer is a story with so many layers, lovingly told with an enchanting voice. The story is for Every Person. Who can't relate to those moments of awkwardness as a teenager where you wish the world would quake open and swallow you whole? Who hasn't felt their alter ego stir inside them?

Jill Cooper creatively blends two worlds, that of our Every Girl Natalie and that of The Dream Slayer, both equally harrowing in the fantastic and every day life. Jill Cooper doesn't shy away from the wicked, nor does she sugar coat her characters' worlds and she does it so magically that you're rooting for your favorites--regardless of what side you're one.

She deliciously paints evil against a beautiful backdrop and takes the reader through a fast whirlwind of suspense and horror anchored with solid characters. There were times I was truly afraid for the protagonist and her friend, and times when I cheered with their triumphs. It is more than just a teen story with vampires and dark fangy things in the night. It is a story about finding inner strength and overcoming adversity, even when everyone wants to see expected failure.

If the supernatural is your passion and you want to sink your teeth into a little more than a young adult paranormal story, you'll love Jill Cooper's The Dream Slayer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Is it a dream or reality? March 22, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Natalie Johnson is pretty much your average bullied teen with an abusive father... but that is about where the average ends! The novel starts off in a chase (quite literally!) and doesn't let up until the final faceoff! The novel is well paced and characters are likeably flawed in BOTH worlds. I found myself wishing she'd end up with one boy and then the other... then the opposite in the next second. Loved that triangle.

Someone mentioned Buffy in another review and I had to laugh... Buffy has nothing on Natalie! She's is the slayer I'd want watching my town!

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and never dull February 20, 2013
Format:Paperback
I was so intrigued by the concept of this book, I couldn't wait to read it. I'm so glad I did! It was interesting and, though I was a bit confused at first at the switches between the two Natalies, it didn't take long to get to know how they sounded and could tell them apart easily.

I don't even know how to describe this plot (the blurb above does a great job), but I will say that it was never boring. I was fascinated by how the two worlds began to intersect and how the different characters from each were the same, but different.

The author's writing skills are exceptional, and her descriptions are clear and three dimensional. I could see all the characters, the settings and more. I really felt as though I was right there with Natalie, especially when the action picked up.

She created a love triangle (if there are two Natalies, does that make it a love square?) of sorts with Tristan and Damian, but honestly I found Damian's interest a little odd. Tristan, though, is a sweetheart and clearly the right one for at least one of the Natalies.

Action packed, with a cast of well-rounded characters, The Dream Slayer is a young adult book I can happily recommend for teens of all ages. The violence is there, of course, but not overly graphic (except, perhaps, one place at the end during an almost demon buffet) and the romance is sweet. I am looking forward to the sequel -- maybe the Natalies will meet?
