Editorial Reviews

The Dreamer, The Believer delivers the consciousness Common's audience has to come expect from him, but also a rawness and passion that might come as a surprise. Some might even say that he's rapping with a chip on his shoulder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreaming Is Believing December 20, 2011
By Q. Pair
Format:Audio CD
If your a fan of Common, then by now you'll most likely have noticed there is a pattern with him and his work: He'll put out maybe one or two quality, dope albums in a row, then get comfortable and try to branch out a bit and do something experimental, then after an overall lukewarm reception from the fans, goes right back in and cranks out another gem to make up for the last one. The Dreamer, The Believer is the fruits of his labor after the experiment, and true to the pattern he has established for himself, it is indeed a gem.

Its good to see your favorite artists grow and mature musically over the years, but its even better when they know how to go back to the sound that got you interested in them in the first place. Common definitely does that by wisely linking up with long time collaborator No I.D. to produce the entire album. Despite how well Common and Kanye work together (see Com's album, Be) The chemistry born between these two on wax is awe inspiring, and if you somehow missed out on the last masterpiece created by their said chemestry (Resurrection) then here is a good chance to see what its about. Com really put his foot in this one.

Starting things off on the right foot, the album opens up with "The Dreamer" feat. Maya Angelou, in which Com raps about the many aspects of dreaming to do bigger things. While already being well written by Com, the fantasic and soulful, in your face production from No I.D. punctuated with the wise words of Maya Angelou closing it out really make this a noteworthy track. Easily, my favorite track on the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real os Back!! December 20, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I know not a clue about Chicago, but when it comes to music, Common is the REAL chi that I know... With this album, its clear that the Yeezy effect is just an option.. and this album is my classic already... the underrated rapper has shown his true skill with this album, and this is officially my favorite release of the year... I had no idea it was coming, and bam, hit me with surprise with nothing but talent..

the feeling of this album is like falling in love with a woman you don't know, and knowing nothing about the Chi, I'm in love with the REAL chi town music... keep it moving Com... top to bottom of the album was flame without a Flocka....

5.0 out of 5 stars Certifiable Classic in the True Essence of Hip-Hop December 20, 2011
Format:Audio CD
As someone said earlier, Common has great albums, then he branches out to something new. This is a CLASSIC in the making. I bought it first thing this morning, placed it in the CD player in the car and didn't skip a single song. I'm not a huge fan of The Believer (track 11) and Pop's Belief (Track 12), but the first 10 songs are great, the music is conscious, the beats are ridiculous and the CD is better than 90% of what's out there today. It makes my Top 5 for 2011, just in time for Christmas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easily Eclipses 2008's Universal Mind Control December 30, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Common's 2008 effort Universal Mind Control was pretty atrocious. No one faults the MC for trying something new and even shuffling producers, but the resulting product, especially given the vast array of intellectual events that Common could've rapped about in 2008, was clearly subpar to say the least. Thankfully, 2011's The Dreamer/The Believer brings Common back to his intellectual authenticity, while sneaking some fun in there. The balance is much better here, making The Dreamer/The Believer Common's strongest effort arguably since 2005's Be. Boding well in Common's favor is the use of veteran hip-hop producer No ID, who delivers the goods throughout The Dreamer/The Believer.

The album opens in typical Common fashion with the cerebral "The Dreamer," which features a poem recited at the end by none other than Dr. Maya Angelou. The production is solid and soulful, providing a sound background for Common to spit his electrifying rhymes atop. "The Dreamer" is a bit off-putting upon an initial listen, but after successive listens and ingesting the contents of Common's rhymes, the track's magic unfurls itself. The electrifying "Ghetto Dreams" is more accessible, featuring none other than fellow intellectualist MC Nas. Sampling two cuts ("Let's Make It Last" as performed by The Fellows and "Hope" as performed by Nas), the production is once again noteworthy, propelling strong performances by both MCs. Common begins on fire, rapping aggressively: "I want a b**** that look good and cooke good/Cinderella fancy, but she still look hood..." Nas certainly does not let himself be undone, delivering some of his own pointed rhymes: "I notice all my flaws when comes to writing rhymes/subject matter be changing too quickly at times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never disappoints December 25, 2011
By Bespoke
Format:MP3 Music
It's Common bruh, what did you expect. He never fails on us, never. Regardless of what anyone thinks he always stays true to real hip-hop and I love that because that's not what is really selling right now but it is what is playing in my ride so. If you love dope beats and dope rhymes you will love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing common about how hot this cd is.
This album is one of Common's best. A very insightful and well written, produced and mixed album with no B.S. features like most rappers do today.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you were feeling GO!, this album will take you there.
Common is bringing back his flavor from Go!, which he had lost in Universal Mind Control--at least thats how I feel.
