Rhett Miller is the front man and main songwriter of the hard-charging rock ‘n’ roll quartet the Old 97’s, as well as an accomplished solo artist. In addition to his seven records with the 97’s, he’s released two highly regarded solo albums, The Instigator (2002) and The Believer (2006). Editorial Reviews

Rhett Miller has announced the release of his new album, The Dreamer, on June 5. The Dreamer was produced by Miller himself and will be released on his very own Maximum Sunshine Records, distributed by The Orchard. The Dreamer is Miller's sixth solo record and represents the first time he has ever self-produced. In the past, Miller's solo efforts were dramatically different from his work with the Old 97's. While the band's songs are often steeped in Americana and country, the solo records have always been decidedly more rock and pop affairs. That is until now, as The Dreamer finds the Texas-bred, New York-based singer/songwriter marrying his two worlds like never before.

Rhett Miller's "The Dreamer" is not a pop opus. It is not an all out roller coaster of rowdy galloping songs.

What "The Dreamer" is, however, is a collection of warm, heartfelt, beautifully written songs. I think "The Dreamer" is Rhett's most cohesive release to date. The songs speak for themselves and invite the listener in to the world Miller created. These songs, rather than being autobiographical, are vignettes about love lost, love found, and growing old in love. They paint pictures of people who have seen better days, and people who don't think they'll see a day better than the one we hear within roughly 3:00 minutes.

Rhett's vocals are as diverse throughout the record as they've ever been. He really sets the tone on this record in the way he sings the songs. On "Complicated Man", Rhett's voice adds immediate fragility. The duet with Roseanne Cash is fabulous, and could rival any classic country duet. "Swimming In Sunshine" is sweet and perfect for those days at the pool this summer.

Rhett and the musicians on this record really put their hearts in this record, with a few listens you can tell. It's worth it. Pick up this record if you're on the fence about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Songs June 9, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Only on my second listen and want to leave a review.

If you're already a fan of The Old 97's or Rhett Miller...think of 'Satellite Rides' with a laid back, country feel to it.

Rhett always puts out quality music but, front to back, this immediately strikes as his best solo effort.

Lead vocals up front, steel guitar all over the place, and a great cast of female backing vocals.

It's nice to see a singer-songwriter finally live up to the earlier work that made them great...many of the other artists in this genre haven't been able to it in a long, long time.

I think Rhett Miller does on this album.

Get'll like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rhett Rocks! May 10, 2013

Rhett is one of my favorite solo artists. I was actually worried when I heard this album might be a little more country than I like (I'm not a country guy at all), but this was great stuff. The pedal steel on some tracks is too twangy for my tastes, but Rhett did it again. Brilliant songwriter.
