You have seen them. They like to congregate around weight benches and mirrors. They wear their cutoffs so you can see their ink. They have their hair gelled even when they work out. They always have a can of Monster or Redbull with them. And they drive a lifted truck. They are “men.” Or shells of men to be a bit more accurate. Society around us has taught us that these guys are “men.” When in reality they are kids who stayed in adolescence a bit too long, maybe even perpetually. In The Dude’s Guide to Manhood Darrin Patrick tries to show us what real masculinity is all about. He provides a roadmap, so to speak, for those who have not been instructed in the ways of men.

Overview

We have a problem. “Men are simply unprepared to face the journey of manhood, in part because they have never been prepared in the first place…. We are on our own, and we don’t know where we are going” (XVI). Darrin is brutally honest with us, he is one of those guys, he didn’t have a great roadmap, thankfully though we won’t have to deal with that same problem since we have this book to help guide us.

Each of the chapters of this book deal with one aspect of what it means to be a man. Men are determined. Men are coachable. Men are disciplined. Men work. Men are content. Men are devoted to their woman. Men love their family. Men are connected in meaningful ways to other men. Men display the right emotions at the right time. Men fight. Men are heroic. And most importantly, men live in light of God’s grace.

Each chapter treats one of the topics I just mentioned. In each chapter you will probably find some personal anecdote, some movie quotes, some sociology, and maybe even a little bit of biblical material.

“Look, just figure it out!”

“If it’s gonna be, it’s up to me!”

These are common phrases that define manhood in the context of our society today. But these phrases are not the original definition of manhood. Manhood begins by losing your life & looking to one greater model and that is Christ. Jesus was a disciplined man. Jesus was a gentle man. Jesus was a strong man. Jesus was a kind man. Jesus worked. Jesus rested. Jesus sought. Jesus learned. Jesus trained. Jesus gave. Jesus celebrated. Jesus wept. Jesus encouraged. Jesus challenged. Jesus lived to the fullest.

In this guide, men will learn how to listen. Men will learn how to give. Men will learn that work is worth it. Men will also learn how to not give up and how to love at all costs. This is a needed guide and an encouraging guide to become what God intended and how to stay that way.

You’ll find this book both helpful & humorous with applications for the everyday man!

It seems as of late, there has been more emphasis on being a man or achieving manhood. Some would even consider growing a beard the sign of a true man which I am saying there nothing wrong with growing a beard. There are even commercials on television talking about smelling like a man. I remember one "Snickers" commercial where two guys did something that revoke their man cards then looked at each other and said, "Lets do something manly." Does you remember what they did next? They started ripping their chest hairs.

We even got words that downgrade manhood such as "Man Crush," which a man having a "crush" on another guy because of how manly he is. How about "Bromance?" Wikipedia defines it as "a close non-sexual relationship between two (or more) men." So I can have close male companions and it is a bromance which is a play on the word "romance." Man card revoked!!!

What is true manhood and how does a man get there? What does it mean to be a true man without compromising who you are in Christ? Darrin Patrick talks about that in his latest book, The Dude's Guide to Manhood. This book maps out what true manhood is. How a man is suppose to be determined, where he does not give up in accomplishing his goals. Also true manhood is taught to a man who is teachable. Patrick said, "True manhood isn't unearthed by accident. It doesn't simply happen as we get older or as our circumstances change. We don't wake up as men one day, and we don't stumble into it. It is handed down from one generation to the next" (pg 18-19).

True manhood means that men are disciplined and it is not just athletes. Men need to be disciplined in every area of their lives including the work place which man was created to work. Read Genesis 2. God put Adam to work in the garden before the Fall.

We women are often disappointed with our men and think they need a lot of help. Well, they do, and so do we in understanding them. I've been married for 39 years and this book tuned my heart towards my husband in several ways. In reading about men's unique struggles, I was able to ask questions that I hadn't ever asked before and was able to affirm him, recognizing areas that he had overcome through the years. Single women could read this and benefit from the knowledge as well.
