About the Author

Horacio Perez-Blanco is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Pennsylvania State University. A fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Dr. Perez-Blanco teaches short courses on gas turbines for the International Gas Turbines Institute and has developed an energy systems laboratory for his department. His research interests include thermal systems, simultaneous heat and mass transfer, and gas turbine inlet cooling.

We are starting to see publication of books on "new energy technologies." This book provides information not found in the typical book on the subject. Using thermodynamic modeling, the present book provides a detailed assessment of the various forms of fossil and nuclear energy conversion, renewable conversion, and utilization technologies. The presentation clearly presents assessments of conversion efficiencies, explores the effects of energy use on the environment, and offers an introduction to related dynamic modeling. The book contains 10 chapters that address the various fossil, nuclear, and renewable fuels. It also evaluates energy supplies, conversion, and end use. The basic theory and explanations are very clearly presented. The final chapter discusses energy technologies that, if suitably employed, could configure a sustainable energy future.

The book contains a CD that provides examples of dynamic modeling with program VisSim(tm), which provides examples and examines the potential of current energy sources to serve future energy needs. Users may use the modeling tools to make modified energy modeling assessments. This is important to ascertaining what technologies offer promise for a sustainable energy future.

The book provides a detailed thermodynamic understanding of possible energy choices and conversion technologies. It provides a very broad and detailed assessment of evaluation methodology and scenarios of known energy conversion technologies. It will be very useful to persons seeking understanding of present and future energy choices, their abundance, and conversion efficiencies. This would make an excellent text book, if homework exercises were provided. These likely can be obtained from the author.

Format: Hardcover
Dr. Perez-Blanco has a very clear, straight forward style to his writing that make it easy to follow. He starts with concrete examples and leads you through the math behind the physics. This is an important subject that is finally getting some commercial attention. I find the included VisSim diagrams and the royalty free Viewer to be very compelling. It is very enlightening to run the models, play with input values and see how it affects the results in the interactive plots.
