Whenever I walk into one of my doctor's offices, I'm always surprised to see how much paperwork is all over the place and how inefficient they are as a general business. But it's not their fault. When you decide to go into business for yourself, you know your profession well, but do you also know how to run a business?

The EHR Guru: A Parable that Explains How to Implement Electronic Health Records Without the Techno-Babble by Morris Stemp, CPA, MBA, CPHIMS (with David Russell), is an easy-to-read quick book. It's like a how-to book with a storyline.

From the beginning, the reader is absorbed into the work life of Sam Bushman, an administrator in an orthopedic practice. His boss Karen Metz, who is the head physician of the practice, insists that Sam find a way to make the office run more efficiently and gives him the task of researching a system that would be suitable for their practice. "If you don't have a plan for implementing a new system of records and workflow around here by the time I return from this trip... I'm going to have to fire you."

This puts Sam on a whirlwind chase to find the perfect solution for the orthopedic practice. When he comes home that night, he finds that his little boy, Kevin, is sick with a cough. He calls the pediatrician. When his pediatrician is out of town and can't see him for a week, he calls Dr. Taylor, the pediatrician that Dr. Metz asked him to look at because of Metz's efficient practice.

He takes his son to Dr. Taylor's practice the next day and Sam notices that everything is computerized and linked together. From intake to diagnosis and follow up to medical billing, Sam discovers a whole new world.

I just finished reading The EHR Guru and it really approaches EHR implementation from a different viewpoint. It is somewhat like crossing "EHR Implementation 101" with Grimm's Fairy Tales. Very suitable for practice managers and those who will assume the role of physician champions. For those of you that have already been through an implementation you will probably find yourself between the pages. I sure did.
