Book Description

October 14, 2010
America's hottest fashion magazine blends expert advice with in-depth studies of twenty-five unique style icons, from Diane Von Furstenberg to Dita Von Teese to Alicia Keys, for personal style inspiration.

Celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2010, ELLE magazine has a readership of more than five million.

In the same teaching through example style that has made ELLE the ultimate fashion resource for scores of loyal fans and the #1 fashion magazine, The ELLEments of Personal Style gives readers exclusive access to today's most glamorous personalities, along with hundreds of practical tips and inspiring photographs. The result is a sumptuous, comprehensive guide for creating an authentic, alluring personal style.

Featuring twenty-five case studies of style icons that represent a wide range of tastes and backgrounds, The ELLEments of Personal Style brims with behind-the-scenes interviews, along with commentary on why each icon's wardrobe works. Describing a red cocktail dress that always makes her feel flawless or the jacket bought on a special trip to Paris, each woman provides a personal collage of memorable objets d'art that serve as an inspiration list. Some of the women who gave ELLE unprecedented access to their homes, closets, and inspirations include: Fergie, Estelle, Padma Lakshmi, Candace Bushnell, Christina Hendricks, Tracee Ellis Ross, and others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! October 24, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I have to be honest - I am not a fan of Elle magazine. I feel like the pages are cluttered with teeny tiny pictures and there's just way too much crammed inside one magazine (I do like Joe Zee though and think his style advice is priceless). So, I didn't expect much of the book, but I was wrong. The book discusses styles of 25 women (some are well known - Alicia Keys, Fergie, Diane Von Furstenberg; and some are not so well known (well, at least, to me) - Katherine Pope, Janie Bryant) and every woman has a few pages that include bio, inspiration board and their favorite item. Photographs are gorgeous and the text is written very well. It was very interesting to read about every woman and a few of them were quite inspirational! I do have to note one thing though. Some of the women that made it into the book are very stylish and it makes sense that they were included (for example, Dita Von Teese and Diane Von Furstenberg), but others I'm not so sure about (for example, Fergie, Kate Mara, Asheley Greene)... I would have loved to see Olivia Palermo, Blake Lively (who doesn't use a stylist, yet looks incredible every time), Elle McPherson, etc. to be included.

2.0 out of 5 stars If you like celebrity lists October 19, 2010
By Elena
Format:Hardcover
To be hinest, I was very disappointed. I expected to learn something new and interesting but instead I found another celebrity list: 25 famous women and their short style bios. The list contains Fergie, Diane Von Furstenberg, Angelica Huston, Candace Bushnell, Christina Hendricks, Milla Jovovich and 20 more (some of which I am not familiar with), all of whom are either models, actresses, novelists or stylists. There were a few pages dedicated to each, containing either short style bio or short interview, "inspirational board", and one article of clothing most important to them (for instance for Diane von Furstenberg it was a wrap dress and for Angelica Huston it was a pearl necklace). I admit, it was fun to read about one or two that I, personally, admire, like Diane Von Furstenberg, but other than that it was a bore. The photos were nice but that's about it. The book was just too subjective and if you want to learn something from one of the women of style, get "I love your style" by Amanda Brooks.

3.0 out of 5 stars nina's books are better October 20, 2010
By andie
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
all books on fashion promote a specific, if not a singular, point of view. usually, that view is a variation on "be yourself", without suggesting which "self" you should be, and offers ideas to help you stretch your sartorial boundaries. this one is no different, and if you're going to listen to anyone, joe zee is one of the best. "the ELLEments," however, lost its way somewhere in selecting its icons -- for example, kate mara, christina hendricks, and alicia keys. talented, lovely women all, but no one is likely to think "fashion" when you think of them. you will look at the featured women and wonder who they are and/or why they're in the book. then you'll come up with a list of more suitable candidates. tops on my list is olivia palermo, a purported elle staffer (but like a woman's colorist, who knows for sure?) with miles of panache. why isn't she in the book?

no such issues with nina garcia's books. i use them for planning trips, organizing my closet, and most of all, inspiration. the ELLEments has great photos, but nina's books have ruben toledo's drawings -- the drawings aren't as immediate as photographs but they are timeless and are always fresh every time i view them.
