The Eagle Has Reanimated is a short story that takes a look at the world Romero created with Night of the Living Dead and takes one of history's most famous moments from that time period and puts them on a crash course. What if zombies had been real back in the late sixties? What if the world was just beginning to fall into the grips of the undead as NASA planned its launch of Apollo 11, putting the first man on the moon?

This is a short story, so I won't elaborate on the plot too much. I will say that the author did some research here and gives us some interesting tidbits about each of the astronauts and other details surrounding the real elements of Apollo 11, while embellishing things with zombies in a fun and creative way that had me entertained from start to finish of this brief tale. I particularly liked some of added touches, which includes references to two characters from the movie Day of the Dead, as well as how a zombie and a breathing human would actually react to the vacuum of space.

If you are a fan of the classic Romero zombie, and especially his first trilogy of movies, this story fits in perfectly with that world...and beyond!

Houston, we have a problem

Originally this phrase was used as a genuine report of a life-threatening fault. It's now used more often to humorously report any kind of problem. However, the use of this phrase in The Eagle Has Reanimated takes the phrase back to its origin.

The Eagle Has Reanimated by Tony Schaab has been nominated for the 2010 Nebula Awards (The Nebula Awards are annual awards presented by Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America to celebrate excellence in science fiction and fantasy writing) This novelette introduces us to an alternate history of NASA's Apollo XI moon-landing in July 1969. It invites us to wonder how would our world have been different had the living dead become an unwelcome part of this important mission? Maybe, just maybe, those rumors about the filming of the adventure have a basis of truth.

I can definitely understand why The Eagle Has Reanimated has been nominated for an award. This is a highly entertaining novelette. Tony Schaab captured the comradery of a team of astronauts preparing to make history with a great deal of believability. The slight change in the history of this famous expedition make for a fun and thrilling adventure. I, also, love the pop culture references of the time. I know this may be on the short side for a review, but as this is a novelette and I do not want to go into too many details and give away the story.

As astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins prepare for the Apollo XI mission, a rash of random violence and an unknown disease strikes the Mid West. That worries Armstrong since his family's in Ohio. But he can't let that get to him; none of the crew can. They all have a mission to complete -- to be the first men to walk on the Moon -- and unless they hear otherwise, nothing's going to keep them from their goal. Once in space, the mission seems to be moving according to plan until some excess weight throws the landing module slightly off course. Too late do the astronauts realize just what exactly that extra weight is going to cost them.

I enjoyed how the novelette takes what everyone knows about the Apollo XI mission -- from the small facts about the astronauts and earlier missions to the speculation about whether it actually happened or was filmed on a soundstage -- and injects it with the living dead to speculate how that might alter events. What also works is that the story doesn't rely on much gore to get the scares across. The tension builds slowly, carefully focusing in on the three astronauts. After all, what could be more frightening than being trapped in a confined space with one of those creatures slowly shambling toward you and with no way to escape, nowhere to run?

"The Eagle Has Reanimated" is a great zombie-infested alternative version of history, one that I found difficult to put down once I started. I think other readers will, too.
