Biography

Britain's greatest pop diva, Dusty Springfield was also the finest white soul singer of her era, a performer of remarkable emotional resonance whose body of work spans the decades and their attendant musical transformations with a consistency and purity unmatched by any of her contemporaries; though a camp icon of glamorous excess in her towering beehive hairdo and panda-eye black mascara, ... Editorial Reviews

Long before she reigned as Britain's 'Queen Of Soul', Dusty Springfield learned the ropes initially as a member of The Lana Sisters, and then more famously in The Springfields, alongside her Brother, Tom. This unique compilation includes everything that Dusty recorded between 1958 and 1962, with both groups. Disc 1, tracks 1-14 features everything recorded by The Lana Sisters and all the other tracks feature The Springfields. The latter enjoyed significant International success, including a couple of million selling singles, "Silver Threads And Golden Needles" (which made the US Top 20) and "Island Of Dreams" (UK Top 5), both of which appear on this set. Includes The Springfields two LPs 'Kinda Folksy' and 'Folk Songs From The Hills', plus contemporaneous singles and many collector's rarities, most notably a handful of rate German and French language recordings, which are virtually impossible to find elsewhere on CD. Also features the unfeasibly rare Springfields 4 track Christmas EP, which was only ever available as a mail order item via Woman's Own magazine.

This is Dusty Springfield before she was known as Dusty Springfield. On the first fourteen tracks she's Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien (whew!). Here she's part of The Lana Sisters in a pop trio singing innocent tunes of the day. They're pleasant enough bu nothing all that special. Hearing Springfield (O'Brien) singing in a "girl-group" style, and knowing what she sounded like a few short years later is a bit of an eye-opener. Some of the tunes are up beat pop ("Buzzin'" with it's short sax solo and "Cry, Cry Baby" with it's tough drumming and electric rhythm guitar) and show how music was just beginning to change in Britain. The trio does harmonize pretty well on several of these tunes which makes for passable listening. I have to say that I actually liked several of these tunes--the arrangements, the vocals, the up-beat feel--is actually pretty cool in a late 1950's way.

The rest of Disc One and all of Disc Two is taken up by The Springfields. This is early, innocent 60's folk music, and sometimes a few early songs are just bordering on pop but are still firmly rooted in straight folk music. The trio consisted of (now known as) Dusty Springfield, her brother who went by the adopted name Tom, and Rashed Felid, who adopted the name Tim. The trio very soon had a lot of work, and soon landed a recording contract. The Springfields' name came from a time when the trio was rehearsing in a field in Spring, and about this same time Mary adopted the name Dusty. They released several singles which were in the charts and they were voted Best Vocal Group in both NME and Melody Maker polls of the time.

65 songs on two CDs. For the first time ever Dusty's association with the Lana Sisters is on cd except for "Two Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat" which was released previously on the 2000 set "Simply Dusty". There are better masters of the Springfields signature songs "The Island Of Dreams" and "Silver Threads And Golden Needles" but nothing has this scope of songs. The mix of audio is stereo and mono, I've heard and own a better version of The Springfields "Christmas EP" but again the overall scope outweighs my issue with the engineering which compared to better masters come off a bit cottony.
