A Celtic Collection

The Eclective is one of those collections of short stories by different writers designed to give you a little flavor of their writing styles, some information about the authors, information about their titles and how you can get them. I was only familiar with one of the authors prior to reading these stories. The stories all had some connection to the Irish, but are very diverse in their approach and style.

The first story I read introduced me to an author I definitely put on my "to read" list for a couple of reasons. Shea Macleod wrote a beautiful little piece of paranormal mystery that reminds me a great deal of "The Dresden Files," by James Butcher. I loved the Dresden Files having read every title of the series and still waiting for another installment. Like Butcher, McLeod is very accurate in the details of the city the story is set in, which is the other thing I found appealing about the story. It's set in the same town I live in! The story is titled ,"Irish Kiss."

I've read one book by M. Edward McNally so I was not surprised by the quality of his story. He is an excellent writer. I was surprised by his historical fiction short story, "The Luck of the Irish Brigade," however. It's unusually well researched for a short story. Really a nice little historical fiction piece.

The Song of the Banshee is a ghostly story involving a mainstay of Celtic lore, the bean sidhe. Heather Marie Adkins creates a Banshee that is very contemporary and endearing as we read her perspective on the lonely life of an immortal who's mission is to accompany the dead to the other side.

The Red Veil of Vengeance by Jack Wallen is a vampire story which takes place in ancient Ireland. It is a classic horror homage and a brilliant read.

P.J. Jones has contributed an amusing short called Zombies Eat Leprechauns which is sure to make you curious about his title , "Attack of the Fairytale Zombies."

Five Shamrocks is a romantic tale by Alan Nayes. This is for those hopeless romantics out there and they will not be disappointed. They will no doubt be very curious about his book, Gargoyles which promises to be high drama combined with mystery and intrigue.

I'm not usually a huge fan of the short story. This book, however, may contribute to a change in the way I regard them. I enjoyed all the stories, actually. The ones I enjoyed the most were probably (in no particular order): The Song of the Banshee, The Luck of the Irish Brigade, and Irish Kiss. But I seriously enjoyed them all and found some great new people to read in the process.
