Book Description

Are you longing for your life to be easier and more fun? Would you like to stop pushing, micromanaging, and forcing things so you can relax? What if you could enjoy what you have instead of always lusting for “more”? What if you could live in “the zone,” propelled by powerful currents toward the right people and opportunities? What if you could stop worrying about money and live with more emotional ease in the moment? If you answer “yes” to all these questions and desire lasting positive change, then prepare to experience the ecstasy of surrender.
The art of letting go, Dr. Judith Orloff explains, is the secret key to manifesting power and success in all areas of  life, including work, relationships, sexuality, radiant aging, and health and healing. In our superconnected world where emails and text messages constantly interrupt us, it’s easier to let go than you think. Once embraced, surrendering removes roadblocks and the exhaustion that comes from “trying too hard”—and it helps you achieve goals more effortlessly and brings ongoing happiness.
With her stunning gift for storytelling coupled with her unique, results-oriented approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual health—marrying neuroscience, psychiatry, intuitive medicine, energy techniques, and more—Judith provides a powerful, practical, and accessible map for anyone who is longing to be happier but who feels stuck, burned-out, tense, worried, or afraid to let go.

Q&A with Dr. Judith Orloff

The Ecstasy of Surrender Q&A with Dr. Judith Orloff

Let’s get this out in the open. Your new book is about surrender. A lot of people, especially in the United States, think of surrendering as something negative. We don’t give up! We preserve! We don’t surrender. We fight! What do you mean by surrender and how can it benefit us on a day-to-day basis?

I am so passionate about writing a book about surrender because, as a physician with more than twenty years of medical practice, I’ve seen that it is the missing part of the equation to happiness and health. I’m intrigued with the idea of surrender, not as defeat or loss—as it is frequently thought of—but as a positive, intuitive way of living. Contrary to common stereotypes that equate surrender with weakness, I’m presenting it as a way to gain mastery of your life. People don’t think surrender will work because they fear giving up power. In this book I want readers to experience the elegant balance of knowing when to exert control in their lives and when to let go. This is the secret to success and bliss.

Lots of people strive to keep all aspects of their life in control at all times, but when a crisis hits, such as job loss, relationship difficulties, or problems with a child, they spiral into anxiety or depression. What would be the first thing you would suggest they do to start healing and relieve stress?

The first step to healing is to realize: As much as we might like to control everything, everything cannot always be controlled. Accepting this will lead to inner peace. Of course, it’s natural to feel depressed and anxious when adversity hits, but the art of surrender allows you to exhale instead of clench. It’s important to surrender to the love that is around you for support. Mighty forces can come to your aid when you humbly surrender to life. This doesn’t mean giving up or giving in—it means accepting what is and trying to do your best with as much faith and hope that you can muster. And above all else, shower yourself with compassion. Know that life goes through cycles of change, and you can ride through like a surfer navigating a magnificent wave. Accepting life on life’s terms—learning to flow through joy and adversity—is the gorgeous dance of life.

Over the years you say you have personally learned to trust the process and surrender to those things you resist or fear. What have you learned and gained by surrendering? Are you always successful? What if I try to surrender, do so for a day, but then feel myself creeping back to my old ways? What can I do?

Surrender is my lifelong meditation! It keeps all of us healthy, younger, playful, more passionate, and flexible. I have only touched the surface of surrender. It’s natural to slip back to your old ways of overcontrolling. But be happy with baby steps. In this book I celebrate small changes. Don’t worry if you slip! Just pick yourself up and keep moving! Be grateful that you are making progress at all. Surrender is a journey that continues to awaken you. When I began the holy journey of writing this book, I longed to experience surrender more than anything else. Now, as my writing has concluded, I see how generous this book has been to me, how much I’ve softened and learned to let go. Surrendering has been the catalyst for my growth, even when it was terribly inconvenient and unsettling. This is where faith and trust come in. When you can flow with change, the results are incredible. I am in the midst of radical change—a great blossoming for which I am profoundly grateful.

We live in a fast-paced world and let’s face it: sometimes we get caught up in emotional traffic jams. You say that people can be blocked in different areas of their lives. Relationships. Money. Health. Sexuality. Does the modern world and pace set us up to struggle with letting go? Is there a way to embrace the modern world and the surrender at the same time?

When you choose to practice surrender, you are being a revolutionary, a path forger who is willing to challenge cultural norms. Western culture’s habits of overintellectualizing, overcontrolling, and pushing so hard that you sabotage and exhaust yourself do not work. In this book, I invite you to live life in extraordinary terms and to devote to your practice of letting go. Every moment of life is so precious—the modern world, your inner world, your soul’s journey. In this book, I urge you to surrender to it all. I encourage you to give yourself some time away from mundane reality (even five minutes each day!) so you can replenish your energy and faith and grow stronger. You need to be strong to function in the world. When you can spiritually, emotionally, and physically surrender it takes so much pressure off! And you can feel bliss. Yes, bliss!! Everyone is capable of it if you can surrender to the magnificent mystery of life and to your magnificent self!

"In this hope-filled offering, Orloff (Emotional Freedom) posits that the only way to live a powerful, successful life is to surrender to it. Blending neuroscience, energy medicine, psychiatry, and the art of intuition, Orloff, an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, addresses major life issues by breaking them into 12 different “surrenders,” including “redefining true success, power, and happiness”; the “four vital insights into power and letting go”; “cultivating impeccable communication”; and “exploring the divinity of your body and sexuality.” With a compassionate and empowering tone, she counsels others not to micromanage life details, but to be in “flow” with them and to look for the lessons in all situations as well as to refuse to live a life governed by fear. Self-assessment quizzes allow readers to measure their level of involvement in self-defeating behaviors; helpful and non-judgmental suggestions provide strategies for overcoming these negative mind-sets. Orloff demonstrates her own adherence to these principles by unflinchingly sharing her own experiences in the spirit of teaching others." Publishers Weekly

"Stop dreaming about the life you want and start living it. Dr. Orloff explains  a dozen ways in which you can let go of what you don't need so you can let in what you do need to lead a happier, fuller life." Bella New York

In The Ecstasy of Surrender: 12 Ways Letting Go Can Empower Your Life [Dr. Orloff] puts her finger on the number-one behavior that leads to ever-increasing levels of stress in our lives: pushing through, forcing things, and trying to make things happen. This well-written, easy to read, highly practical book will be invaluable for anyone who works too hard, lacks balance, feels unhealthy, is stressed out, has dissatisfying relationships, or just wants to get more joy, pleasure, and spark out of life. 5.0 out of 5 stars Not Necessarily New, but Definitely Providential. April 1, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Last week I decided to spring clean, and ever since I've been doing so every day in some way for at least a half hour. I've been revisiting my feng shui, space clearing, and clutter clearing books. When I pre-ordered The Ecstasy of Surrender, I had no idea that I was getting myself another cleaning book. This isn't marketed as a cleaning book, however, it definitely could be. The Ecstasy of Surrender is about cleaning one's soul (or feng shui for the soul as Denise Linn so aptly puts it in her book with the same title).

The Ecstasy of Surrender is about the benefits of letting go (exhilaration, empowerment, abundance, etc.). The information is not necessarily new if you've been in some circles, but it definitely is a good interactive guide to study. Dr. Orloff's voice comes through by showing us how to intuitively surrender. Also, she personalizes the topics by putting her stamp on it - quizzes with lists and summaries. A few years ago I had the chance of talking with Dr. Orloff when she was at the Commonwealth Club. This woman is so real (down to earth). She practices what she teaches. She oozes kindness and exudes wisdom. Her warm personality and authenticity shines through in this book.

(Revisited) Topics of Interest:
The Triune Brain
Hormones (Adrenaline, Testosterone, Serotonin, etc.)
Getting a Sleep Divorce
Being an Empath
Listening to One's Body
Deep Breathing

Some Things to Surrender:
Old Beliefs
Self-imposed Limitations
Mental Chatter
Powerlessness for Being Empowered
Low Self-Esteem

At over 400 pages, this is a guidebook to come back to and marinate in so that the principles can be integrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical tools that you can use right away April 14, 2014
People tell me I need to relax, so when a friend recommended Judith Orloff's new book to me, I figured I'd give it a read. Could learning to let go help me, I wondered? It already has! I used one of her techniques to resolve a disagreement with my wife, and it worked like a charm! By the way, if you're like me and you want books that have practical tools you can use right away, this one is for you. She's got tips for better sex, better money management, more success in your job, and lots more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book! April 1, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I love this book since it teaches me to let go of what is not serving me to make room for the great things in my life. I can stop micro-managing every little thing and allow and surrender to letting things flow easily. I like that the author applies this to all aspects of life from relationships, career to a good night's sleep. I look forward to applying these principles and techniques to all aspects of my life and living with more ease and joy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Start living April 15, 2014
If you are a micromanager in the lives of people around you, stop and take a minute to see how much stress this causes you, and how much anxiety this creates. Judith Orloff shows you how to let go of the little things because of course, deep down we all know, we should be concentrating on the bigger picture, not just the interfering details and nitpicking. Using Judith's advice, I found this book to help me really take a hard look at surrendering things that hold us back , like tearing apart our self esteem, focusing on negative energies that interfere with every day life and not picking apart the ways of our loved ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Judith Orloff! April 4, 2014
I'm a fan of Judith Orloff, having read her last three books cover to cover. I LOVED this one. Here's why: Orloff takes a simple if counter-intuitive idea--that you get more out of life by letting go and letting things flow than you do by pushing and trying to control the outcome--and then shows how we can apply the practice of surrender to 12 different areas of life. I especially loved her insights about aging gracefully, healing from a serious illness or injury, changing one's relationship to money, becoming more influential, and improving sex.

There are hidden gems all throughout this book--quizzes, exercises, tips, and super-practical strategies. If you're a fast-moving type-A perfectionist like I am, get ready to breathe, slow down, and learn that the universe will provide plenty of answers and gifts for you--if you'll just trust it and stop trying so hard.

More About the Author

"Dr. Orloff voices the message that intuition works as a potent therapeutic force that can help us lead smarter, saner lives. She is a serene maverick." --USA Today

Transforming the face of psychiatry, Judith Orloff MD asserts that we are keepers of an innate intuitive intelligence so perceptive that it can tell us how to heal -- and prevent -- illness. Yet intuition and spirituality are the very aspects of our wisdom usually disenfranchised from traditional health care.

Dr. Orloff advocates "a democracy of healing," wherein every aspect of our being is granted a vote in the search for total health. It is our birthright, both as health-care givers and health-care recipients, to reclaim our intuition to build energy and well-being. In response to her work, The Los Angeles Times calls Dr. Orloff "a prominent energy-based healer."

Dr. Orloff is accomplishing for psychiatry what physicians like Dean Ornish and Mehmet Oz have done for mainstream medicine -- she is proving that the links between physical, emotional, and spiritual health can't be ignored. Dr. Orloff has spoken at medical schools, hospitals, the American Psychiatric Association, Fortune Magazine's Most Powerful Women Summit, and alternative and traditional health forums -- venues where she presents practical intuitive tools to doctors, patients, and everyday people.

As a board-certified psychiatrist and assistant professor of psychiatry at UCLA, Dr. Orloff draws upon her own intuitive abilities to help her patients and workshop participants. Dr. Orloff's latest book "The Ecstasy of Surrender: 12 Surprising Ways Letting Go Can Empower Your Life" (Harmony Books, 2014) describes the power of letting go in everyday life, health, and wellness--an enlivening and sane alternative to pushing, forcing, and over controlling people and situations. In addition, her struggles acknowledging and then finally embracing her gift of intuition are chronicled in "Second Sight" (Warner Books). Her second book, "Dr. Judith Orloff's Guide to Intuitive Healing" (Three Rivers Press) shows how breakthroughs in healing our body, emotions, and sexuality can be accomplished by listening to intuition. "Positive Energy," which has been translated into 23 languages, takes a probing look at the American epidemic of exhaustion and how we can reverse it using specific strategies to build energy and combat draining people. Her New York Times Bestseller, "Emotional Freedom" describes how to transform negative emotions into positive ones with specific techniques.
