Bought this book (Kindle version) as required reading for my sustainability management class at Columbia. Excellent read on public management.

Some of my fave quotes: "...a vision of a new kind of public manager, an innovative and effective public manager, one who seeks to shape events rather than be shaped by them", "In the public sector, political factors replace market forces, intensely complicating an organization's strategic decisions. In the private sector, an organization must decide if anyone will buy the proposed produce and if the organizations has the capability to produce, market, and distribute the product. In the public sector, an organization must receive permission and gain resources from elected officials before a product or service can be marketed. A public organization's strategy is highly constrained by political factors."

This is a helpful text in understanding some of the roles and dynamics for a Public Administrator--not for profit and public organizations and governmental departments. It is an easy read. And while it is a basic level text, it does a nice job of tackling some of the complicated issues for Public Administration. The focus is on building infrastructure; staff and program implementation; budget and finances; and public relations issues. A thorough accounting for the general needs in the field of Public Management.

I so appreciate the time and consideration of shipping at the beginning of the standard date, I received it before my assignments for school are due and it is in great condidtion. I really like that it has no highlights or lines or scribbles. I will look for this third party next time I order.

This fourth edition is nicely updated, and is a valuable text for pre-graduate level college students. I find the book to be current in regards to public safety management, and I use it as my current text as an instructor.
