Book Description

THE ELECTRIC BIKE BOOK

There is an electric bike revolution taking place around the world, yet most Americans are unaware of it. Indeed, most Americans couldn’t answer the question, “What is an electric bike?” But get ready to discover how these amazing machines can improve your life and quite literally change the world.
In The Electric Bike Book, author Jim Turner gives us an informative and entertaining look at the rapidly expanding world of electric bicycles. Forget the do-it-yourself garage projects with clunky motors mounted on heavy cruiser bikes. The reality is that hi-tech, modern electric bicycles have come of age in Western Europe and America, where quality manufacturers and some of the world’s best engineers are introducing amazing new technologies and design. The results are innovative and highly efficient electric bicycles that provide safe alternative transportation in such a fun, healthy and environmentally responsible manner as to make urban automobile use obsolete.
Jim Turner is an expert in the field of electric bikes. He designed and builds the Optibike, considered one of today’s premiere electric bikes. Indeed, the New York Times called the Optibike the “Ferrari of Electric Bikes”. The book has information on all aspects of electric bikes, including the styles of motors, quality of batteries, mileage range and energy efficiency, and how easy it is to get your exercise while enjoying a fun ride. What is an electric bike? Come on along for the ride and find out!

1.0 out of 5 stars Vanity publication June 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Jim's book book is quite interesting, I am not totally sure who its intended audience is. I bought it thinking it would help me pick a new electric bike, but it really didn't do that. If you are actually thinking about buying an electric bike and want some easy to understand, unbiased advice, best to check out Average Joe Cyclist Guide: How to Buy the RIGHT Electric Bike.

Jim's book did a lot of other things: taught me about the history of electric bikes, taught me frankly more than I needed to know about the business of electric bikes today, and included interviews with people in whom I have no interest. I did find the life story of the author interesting and inspiring. But the bottom line is that the author has his own electric bike company selling very expensive electric bikes. (The most expensive I have ever heard of.) So obviously what advice he does give about buying electric bikes is completely biased. I am sure his bikes are quite excellent (they better be, for that price!), but what I wanted was a book that would tell me all about electric bikes and help me choose one for myself. All of the good electric bikes are pretty expensive (from around $2,000), so I did not want to buy one without advice, and Googling it just confused me more. My recommendation to other readers: if you want to learn about the history and future of electric bikes for a term paper or something, buy this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars cut out the first few chapters May 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was worthwhile once you get beyond the author's personal story. While mentioning his championship bicycle riding is nice, it really is not pertinent to the subject. After that - yes, a nice intro to electric bicycles.

In Jim's book you will find the how and why for all of your questions regarding the electric bikes. I learned quite a bit and hope to have one of his bikes in the future. If you could change your way to get to work and benefit with the needed savings in money and your health is going to improve. I am sure you will say I should have done this a long time ago. Read the book and then change your life for the good. Von

5.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of electric bicycles May 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Helpful overview of electric bicycles. Covers basic e-bike technology (not too technical for the none-tech), development of the e-bike industry, and e-bike use around the world. It was interesting to read how the USA market differed from most of the rest of the world.

This is a quick and easy read. Minimal investment (99 cents or free) with a significant return.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice overview of electric bikes and batteries May 11, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Jim Turner gives a great overview of the development of electric bikes along with a simplified technical description of the batteries that power them. I wished for a conclusion at the end, which I didn't find. However, the book is a quick read and very enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars An intelligent plea May 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved the book, and I don't know how to ride a bike, I never learned. I am 75 years old and tip the scales at 260 Lbs. This book is my motivation, which is unfortunate since I live in NYC which forbid power assisted bikes.

Information was useful but seems dated. Author claims to be unbiased but favors the bikes he sells. The book is well written and worth the read.
