A few weeks ago, I wrote a review of Stanley Fish's How to Write a Sentence: And How to Read One. The book was marvelous but I had to disagree with Fish's somewhat disparaging comments about this book. I understand why he felt the way he did. However, "The Elements of Style" has had such longetivity because its basic rules and guides are still relevant. No, it may not promote the elegant or dramatic or aesthetically pleasing writing that Fish admires but that was not William Strunk's and/or E.B. White's intention. This book advocates clarity and brevity. It advocates a limited style but it stresses effective sentence structures and writing. Perhaps I will use Mr. Fish's book as a supplemental text for my more advanced writing classes. But in these days of technical jargon and texting abbreviations with all its corruptive influence, I will rely on this slender little thing for my intermediate classes a little longer.
